Grats.. you are the one of the lucky ones.

8.5 repeatedly crashed my top of the line, 64bit streamlined Win7, custom built 8-core monster, randomly.. daily.. for no apparent reason.

Switched to S1, transferred the troubled projects over from 8.5.. never had an issue with them, or any other projects since.. and still have never crashed the thing.

Don't get me started on V-Vocal...
Did you by any chance run firewire interface of any sort?

I evaluated some firewire stuff when building my new daw 3 years ago.
I had some TC Electronics drivers that did BSOD with S 8.5 - but not Reaper.
As soon as I activated an audio input on a track - pooooof...

I left firewire and didn't keep those. Went back to RME internal cards.

Anyway, just a thought...

haggardstudios wrote:It amazes me when people complain about bad code in Cakewalk Sonar. I have been using Cakewalk Sonar for several years and have had nothing but success with it.

I almost forgot to say what SUE is. SUE is Stupid User Error :-o
But after all - how come they are so SUE with Sonar and not other daws they shifted to?

It's just too much frustration from having had crashes while working in Sonar that is vented.

VVocal - just trying to activate it - people reported crashes.
How much more can you do - not much room for SUE.

Many explained how they never worked with multiple instances of VV, and how they carefully fulfilled operations on one track at a time - and removed it after done. People find ways to reduce issues after a while - but still it is poor maintenance that never disappeared. If they really started collecting info from everybody and narrow it down - it could be solved.

When I got my first Waves bundle I tried it on S8.5 as well, since Sonar X1 were supported daw. Within 15 minutes I had a crash just inserting a plugin - probably partly my error - inserting a mono plugin while track was set to stereo or something. I could not repeat it later though.

But worked in Reaper for ever and ever without any sign of instability with any plugins I used.

Anyway - I am quite impressed how well my install of X3 went. Cake has learned a lot it seems. Installers were not the best game for Cake otherwise.

Opened some old 8.5 project and no sign of problems so far. Setup some keyboard shortcuts to liking and fiddled with friendly names of midi and audio ins/outs.

A little odd that default record fileformat still is 16-bit, and you have to change that. Render was set to 32 though. Audio input was set to 24 also, so that was ok.

And keyboard shortcuts are hidden among Advanced settings, maybe that was already in X1, I could not tell. I almost missed it.

Also really clever options to replace VST2 plugins with VST3 version directly if opening old project, if you want that. That was one thing I thought I would have to keep VST2 stuff for as well. If you want backward compatibility you obviously want to uncheck that - or avoid save.

And the same as Studio One does, hiding same plugin if VST2 version exist. A setting if you want that or not.

It looks good and feels good - and I will do serious work tomorrow.

This version of Sonar is suppose to be Cakewalk's most solid (stable) version wich is great and can be worth the upgrade price alone if true, the jury is still out on that one ofcourse.

QUOTE:
"Fixes and Enhancements

Pure refinement.

SONAR X3 includes over a hundred finely tuned tweaks, little enhancements and general improvements throughout, inspired by customer feedback, making it the most refined and solid version of SONAR yet. " END QUOTE

As for VST3: I don't have many VST3 plugins but the Izotope plugins i have are VST3 and VERY hungry plugins so they may benifit from the more cpu efficiency of VST3. Hopefully IK Multimedia will code VST3 versions of T-Racks.

The new Take lanes comping improvements might be interesting.

Not really interested in new plugins in X3. 99% of them would probably be deleted from my vst folder.

I'll need to test and give thought to this upgrade to determine whether to upgrade or not. I still feel Cakewalk has'nt brought major features to Sonar in about 4 years, atleast none that i'm interested in, and that includes this latest release tho i still may "bite the bullet" and upgrade. Does'nt seem like anything major or innovative in this latest release imo, just a few minor but when put together may be worth it. I guess more stability is major but that should've already been present. Hope Cakewalk figure out and impliment major features that gain more market share in the future.

T2 Icarus is a must. SonicCore SCOPE is the most. As heart of studio it has my vote, cause XITE-1 is all she wrote.

I'm just wondering if all the producer only x2 plugins would also work in studio x3. I guess time will tell.
That's an excellent question TheoM. I would love to see an answer, cause I am also leaning towards Studio cause I don't need anymore plugins. Too many options spoils the broth, plus I get confused what to use when and keeps on fiddling with all the plugins. Time waste. I have uninstalled a huge amount of free plugins and some commercial plugins just to keep it lean and mean ;-) and it's working well so far.
Yes, your X2 Producer ProChannel modules will work with SONAR X3 Studio

That wasnt the question but rather whether they would work with x3 studio
Since Studio comes with the basic ProChannel, if you've bought the full modules separately, they should work.... I could be wrong, but I don't see a X3 version of the PC modules for sale, so I think there is just the one version.

Also, I just want to thank someone who is actually affiliated with Cakewalk for participating. No offense, but the total lack of communication on Cakewalk's own forums in the past was disheartening, glad to see some strides being made. :)

Hey AROSSA, i read that Cakewalk re-did their vst engine for VST3 and that there is also improvements for older VST2 plugins, can you tell me what the improvements to older VST2 plugins performances are?
