OK time for the contest proper :D

The contest:

In this contest the challenge is to build a SynthEdit synth or design the GUI for the SynthEdit Synth. You can choose to do just the synth architecture, just the GUI objects and background, or if you are feeling really adventurous, you can do both. The contest ends on Friday the 6th of August at 23:59 GMT, at which point voting can begin, Voting will finish by the same time the following Friday 13th of August.

And now the hard part.. The synth can only contain 4 knobs & 4 sliders..! This will hopefully mean that we should see some interesting patching to try and get around this limitation :D

The other bits of rules:
  • :!: Only standard SE components can be used.. NO seps or sems!
:!: No wave player or SF2 oscillators allowed, any waveforms must be from SE oscillators or by patching other modules in imaginative ways (Phys mod perhaps)
:!: You must make all SE1s available for review by all contestants and similarly all GUI widgets must be made available
:!: Your entry does not neccesarily need to be a one-man effort, if any of you want to team-up, so be it, but you must state clearly who was involved in the build as this may affect the voters decision.
How to submit:

Synth Builders:
..add a link to the SE1 file as well as the dll to this thread.. Please remember to state clearly which Synthedit version you used..

GUI builders:
.. add a link to a zip file containing the GUI objects (Knobs Sliders, txt files, Background and Global.txt) and also post a jpg preview of the finished GUI.

in both cases if anybody has trouble hosting let me know and I'll set something up for you..

I'm sure I've missed something out and if I have forgive me, but anyways, GOOD LUCK and happy building

So, are you saying 8 editable parameters or do you specifically want 4 knobs and 4 sliders, even though they do the same thing?

i would guess specifically 4 knobs and 4 sliders ...

... so that every GUI can be judged on a level playing field

(but ian obviously has final say)

Don't forget that we have a gossip thread for this stuff :D but....

I think that although we could use the various type of editable parameters e.g. a knob with response set to stepped.. we shouldn't because the GUI and the structure are going to be detached, and the action of the controls is set by the GUI txt file.. This will get very confusing if the structure is set up to be a stepped element and the GUI is not...

SO .. the rule remains.. Structure & GUI: 4 knobs (med) 4 vertical sliders..

I know that this is very limiting guys but the whole point is to (as pHz pointed out) create a level playing field and, hopefully to spark some original thinking within these very restrictive guidelines..

I hope that the advantage of all this is, thet there will be very little point in creating a structure along the standard OSC-Filter-Amp route unless its doing something which will make it stand out against the other entries.. and for the GUI guys you will be able to concentrate in coming up with a knob or slider type which will really bring something new to the party..

Remember its only supposed to be a bit of fun..! :D

Whats the policy regarding MIDI controllers?

I assume I can use the pitch & mod wheels.. do they have to be pitch bend & modulation though?

Am i allowed to have a "hidden" volume control on cc7 so I don't tie up a knob?

What about cc74 "Brightness" etc..

sounds OK to me!

sounds OK to me!
:!:
So "allowed external midi CCs" are... (?)
cc01:modwheel
cc07:volume
cc10:pan
cc64:hold
cc74:for any of your choice
and
pitchbend

:!:
Should we allowe the use of display moduls or leds
hooked exclusively to these controllers
AND NOTHING ELSE (!) ?

ik.

No LEDs No Display modules... The only controls on the interface should be 4 knobs & 4 sliders
