Hey guys, I uploaded the first track of my rock project. I'm posting it here because it is done with freeware instruments and FX, with the only exception being the drum samples (NI StudioDrums) and Tom's guitar (recorded DI and into FreeAmp3). I think it shows nicely what can be accomplished with freeware :D

Here are the instruments used:

- NubiLE
- Mr. Ray
- SoftDrum LTD
- FreeAmp3 (on the guitars)
- SQ8L
- Ragnarök
- PianoOne
- TAL Vocoder
- 4Front Bass

CrimsonWarlock aka TechnoGremlin, Moved to Reason and Rack Extensions exclusively (from Reaper and VSTs) several years ago.

How did you get the guitar to sound like that? 2 versions of the riff, or haas effect, or delay?

In the chorus it's two takes, panned pretty hard left and right, with an almost inaudible slapback echo and nothing else but FreeAmp3 making it sound pretty sweet. In the verses it's a guitar chord through the ADT-plugin (the best there is and free) with a lot of echo, and two melody lines on top panned left and right.

I must say there's a ton of processing going on everywhere, vocals have RoomMachine for pure mike reverb simulation and there's oevarll reverb on the track using Ambience. Guitars get a little dash of Ambience as well. There's somewhere around 80-100 FX in total. The song spans 34 tracks.

And all this was done on a single-core 1.2 Ghz machine with 2 Gigs of RAM :D

Hey guys!

I have been wondering about one thing.. It's usually not allowed to use Computer Music plugs in the competition as they are regarded as pay-plugs..
What if we would dedicate one competition to CM-plugs ONLY?
I mean like use one of their synths, and then allow only effect plugs from their suit. So if you have bought a CM in the last year, you should be covered..

Something like the XILS-lab synth could be seriously cool to work with! :)

What do you think?
Changing handle to Subject36..

What do you consider a CM plug? I've never heard the term used before.

A CM contest had already happened, in fact: https://sites.google.com/site/kvrosc/osc-special-cm

@wagtunes: CM plugs are the magware plugins that come along with Computer Music magazine.

So then you'd have to buy the magazine in order to enter these. That could be difficult, especially for old plugs where the mags aren't available anymore. And even with new ones, I don't want to have to buy a magazine just to enter an OSC.

And I don't think many people do.

The CM plugins are actually really good - I'm a huge fan of Curve CM, really versatile; Dune CM is also incredibly good. And the FX are also very useable. Additionally, everything they have now is cross-platform, so it doesn't exclude Mac users. For $5 and immediate digital delivery of all the current CM plugins, it's well within reach of most people. Without a doubt, it is absolutely the best spent $5 by any digital musician for anything music related. I'd postulate that anyone who can't afford the $5 is likely not joining OSC (you have a computer, perhaps some paid plugs, almost certainly a paid DAW). Anyway, there was a CM special already with some very nice prizes, I think it's not all that likely to happen for a while.

Agreed! Without doubt the best value for money you can get. I bought a copy for their article on EQ and was hooked from then on! They have great articles, news and reviews aswell as a dvd full of excellent plugins, and video tutorials, along with a masterclass video in the studio with professional computer musicians each month. Its also how i discovered the OSC. (here endeth the ad  )

I really hope there can be another OSC CM Special some time, the last one was awesome!
