Good to know. Will check my files to this. Thanks for the link, maybe helpful when try to feed my FB01 with some DX7 files. I have no experience with Python. Thats the crazy with OSC, always something new to learn.asb2m10 wrote:There probably not for the DX7: check if the file is exactly 4104 bytes. If it is for say a DX100 or DX11, there is an excellent tool that can convert them to DX7 sysex files : http://dxconvert.martintarenskeen.nl/ Dexed still loads the file even if the sysex checksum doesn't match. I made this possible so there is some kind of "randomize patch" feature. Each parameters are filtered so there is no "security" issue in that case.MTLE wrote: Question for loading DX7 syx. I tried some files downloaded over the years. Didn't get nice results. I have no DX7 to test them, but what could be wrong, except they are not for DX7.
Interesting that it loads all files, I put in. PDFs, RARs, ... Funny sounds. From my knowledge, users input should be always checked for security reasons and to avoid unstable configuration.

Well, Cubase decided to be a real PITA with this one. Apparently, it doesn't like 20 instances of Dexed going at the same time. Some of the automation on export to audio didn't work properly. So what I had to do was internally bounce to audio and then export the audio track to the final file. Don't know why Cubase wouldn't work properly on export but it's happened before, usually with free plugs.
Anyway, here's my track with all the details below.

Would you have an explanation of the Breakpoint slider along with L/R depth?LhaastDaiz wrote:LFO only does something if Pitch Mod or Amp Mod is turned to something more than 0. I believe it affects the whole device, all the carriers or however it works. Load the INIT patch, play a note, and then turn the PMD knob to hear the effect.
I get the rate knob and the curves, but don't really understand the slider and depths.

I would love to know all this, too! I really don't get the purpose... seems to affect the levels at different stages, but an explicit explanation would be awesome.bh9090 wrote:Would you have an explanation of the Breakpoint slider along with L/R depth?

Whenever we do an FM synth in OSC, I have to re-learn it all. Haha. So, instead of just fooling around with the controls, I did some reading about FM synthesis, and it's very much less of a mystery to me now. Here's an article in the Synth Secrets series, I highly recommend reading, at least the latter part after all the complex math stuff: http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/may00/a ... /synth.htm
So, I was partially just trying to get a darn saw wave... and sorta like the article said, I pretty easily get something that sounds 'similar'. But surely there has to be a way to get a real saw wave. Does anyone know?
Side note: all the different ways to set volume on the OPs are very confusing. I would think it much easier to just consolidate each OP into a larger, more easily editable ADSR. There is literally nothing other than the pitch + volume to edit, right? Or am I missing something fundamental about FM and/or DEXED?

Search for keyboard level scaling on this page for some reference. Basically you can change the operators behavior depending on pitch. I think

Haven't tried yet, but here's someone suggesting a method :z.prime wrote: So, I was partially just trying to get a darn saw wave... and sorta like the article said, I pretty easily get something that sounds 'similar'. But surely there has to be a way to get a real saw wave. Does anyone know?![]()

Oh man, thanks. Will try that shortly when I get back home! That 3x2 matrix idea is brilliant, too.mehum wrote:Haven't tried yet, but here's someone suggesting a method :z.prime wrote: So, I was partially just trying to get a darn saw wave... and sorta like the article said, I pretty easily get something that sounds 'similar'. I think this summarizes it, yes?:
These controls (L/R stuff, breakpoint) are for having a layered set of different sounds across the keyboard. Breakpoint is the key on the keyboard that splits the left & right sides. L / R are for said left/right sides of the breakpoint. Allows scaling the operator's volume differently (and thus is able to affect the sound dramatically by scaling the modulators differently).

Thank you for the description. Since soundwise the two versions are identical, I think it's OK for Logic Pro X users to use this 0.8.1 au version of DEXED in OSC#74. Any objections from the moderator or OSCers?asb2m10 wrote:The difference between 0.8.0 and the current branch 0.8.1 :mcaitch wrote: Good to have you here with your great synth! Since my DAW is Logic Pro X (10.1.1) running on OS X Yosemite (10.10.2) I downloaded the above mentioned au test version of DEXED (dexed-0.8.1-au_test.zip). Is the au support the only difference compared to the official VST 0.8.0 version? If not, I think me and others won't be allowed to use it for OSC#74. That would be too bad. I am new to the DAW field and think it is quite tricky to run VST plugins for free in Logic Pro X.
Thank you for your support and clarification!
* Very basic UI theming
* Changed the Middle-C button so it shows the actual note detuned, not just the midi note number
* R Curve shows the right image (the text is still good in 0.8.0)
* Fixed the UI corruption when multiple Dexed instances are loaded
Soundwise nothing has changed. If people gets frustrated by the UI corruption bug, I can release a special OSC version that contains only those UI fixes.

I think there is no problem using the newer version. There have been OSCs in the past where the dev issued some bugfix releases during the month (even where the sound changes between releases!). Hope it fixes any issues you might be having (e.g. the GUI bug)!mcaitch wrote:Since soundwise the two versions are identical, I think it's OK for Logic Pro X users to use this 0.8.1 au version of DEXED in OSC#74. Regarding general volume: only the carriers generate noise, the modulators just modulate the carriers, so the modulator level is like modulation amount. By the way, in case anyone isn't aware, you can copy/paste operator settings by right-clicking 'EG level'.

Found a nice little guide to some drum, bass, and trumpet sounds. I think the drums sound quite good, but my snare sounds a lot like my high hat.

Good to hear your opinion on that and thanks for the info regarding previous OSCs. I am using this 0.8.1 test build because this is the only AudioUnits version of DEXED I found for download.z.prime wrote:I think there is no problem using the newer version. oh, i get it - it's the key scaling like in FM8: http://www.fm8tutorials.com/wp-content/ ... ling-F.png
(Zebra has a similar implementation for the FMOs.
It's just an odd way to implement it to me.
