Yeah, the thing we have to remember is that everything in Dexed (except the filter, I guess) was lifted straight from DX7 and was made to be edited with just a few characters i an LCD display. When we have everything at our fingertips (or rather mouse pointers...) many things seem a bit strangely and unintuitively implemented... The envelopes are certainly another example of this.

The depths of FM synthesis is stunning I must say...

I have updated this cartridge file with a few patches I've made today and yesterday.
Kick, Snare and HiHats included. Feel free to use them as they are or tweak them to make them sound better.
I will update this zip file as I make more sounds for my own entry.

Haven't tried yet, but here's someone suggesting a method :

Oh man, thanks. Will try that shortly when I get back home! That 3x2 matrix idea is brilliant, too. :)
Yeah, algorithm 6 is my favorite so far!

I tried the SAW wave tips from here, and while it's certainly has those qualities it's not the full saw from an analog oscillator. I looked at it in an oscilloscope as well and it looks like a filtered saw.
By making this trick with operators 5 and 6 with algorithm 5 or 6 turning up the feedback adds the proper overtones but it's still a very smooth sawtooth. Not thick but very useful, I must say.

Nice catch!
You can actually right click anywhere on an operator for this to work, as long as it's not on a knob or button.

Yeah, I gave the sawtooth thing a try. No dice... Way too mellow, like you said. Nonetheless I've managed to get some good sounds. And obviously there are some very edgy sounds to be had so I'm happy :) although unsure what type of track to do this month...

There is literally nothing other than the pitch + volume to edit, right? Or am I missing something fundamental about FM and/or DEXED?
No, you're right, but I really can't see how any of the ways could be omitted without losing depth.
Main volume is needed so that you won't have to edit a lot of envelope points for broader changes. The other two basic ways are velocity sensitivity and oscillator modulation.
Then we have the magic keyboard scaling of course...

Working with this really makes me want to design an FM synthesizer :)
I haven't really tried any of the big current commercial ones though (other than FM7 a couple of years back). They've probably solved most of the usability problems and added most features on can think of already...

It is not the same like in FM8 which I tired tried to duplicate the little things I know to produce a sawtooth. The best I could reach (till now) is using algo 2 (just using op 1 and 2) and set op 2 vol to 85. It is like a distorted sawtooch sawtooth/pulse or something like that (I see it in the oscilloscope which I think it is a very helpful tool combining this synth).

Anyway, I like a lot this experience. I haven't done any track yet! Still reading the DX7 manual and will try to make some sounds. There is plenty of time still.

Using: Cubase Pro 15, Reason 13, Tascam US-4x4HR, MODX6, DM12D, LaunchKey 49, Yamaha guitar(Pacifica 612v) and bass (BB234) and some virtual instruments and synths.

Yeah, that works okay. But something is still wrong. I'm sure it can be done with enough tweaking. :)

Using this synth makes me recall why I got rid of my DX7.
It would be great if this software allowed you to copy envelopes!

This doesn't seem to work on the AU version. Anyone have luck with this?

EDIT -- it does work -- sorry. Have to activate "secondary click" in the mouse control in system settings.

This will make editing sounds much faster -- very nice feature to the program!

How do you right click with this? :D

21 instances of Dexed in all, although six were for the radio effects and two tracks were doubled up.
Host: Ableton Live 9
Effects: 2 x Klanghelm IVGI saturation, 2 x ClipShifter, 1 x Vladg Limiter6, 2 x Live Filter Delay (with filter module deactivated, so it's pure delay – Simple Delay doesn't allow for some panning effects), 1 x Simple Delay, 3 x Live Reverb, 1 x Live Gate, 10 x Live EQ8, 1x Melda MCompressor, 4 x Live Compressor, 1 x TDF Feedback Compressor, 3 x Live Multiband Dynamics (used as single-band expander).

What a cool synth. FM is certainly a lil different.

Here is a link I found that describes FM and operators pretty well. It also gives some goto rules for carrier / modulator reletionships.

Click on the SY programming link. Its actually a guide for the Yamaha SY series synths.

Thanks to the developer for a great tool.

Ragnarok was my first OSC and this will be my second. Such a great outlet.

Cheers
