I also own 3 Fabfilter plugins (Pro Q2, Pro MB and Saturn), along with tons of other commercial plugins. Not using them is part of the fun for OSC, it forces you to get creative and find other methods to achieve your goal.

Respect that.

Respect that too ...honest. But, and I choose these words carefully, please open your mind to the possibilities of what we can do here, sans red tape and politicking.

There is something that I think we can do that will at least give more people the chance to level the playing field.

We all know that there are some excellent free plugs out there. One that comes to mind is Limiter6. I dare say it's as good as any paid for compressor/limiter.

Somewhere on the OSC page should be a list of the "top" free plugs as agreed on by the pro sound designers here. Have the list prominently displayed, maybe even on its own sub page of the OSC page (like when you click on the link to read the rules) so that everybody can find it.

Have the list broken down by category (EQ, Delay, Reverb, etc.)

This way we can all have access to the same quality plugs as everybody else.

That to me is a perfect solution. And as new "great" plugs come out, add them to the list.

Okay, just a clarification here. Do you mean that in terms of matching high profile plug-ins line "The Glue" in Abletone Live or "Space Designer" in Logic?

Obviously listing a plugin that's only available in a particular DAW doesn't help those who don't have that DAW. I'm talking strictly about listing the top plugins that are freely downloadable from a web site, like Limiter6, TDR Feedback Compressor, etc.

Yeah but it's a treasure hunt right? Geddit? Who's to say that Robbin Schmidt's Engineers filter is going to be beneficial combined with Signal Dusts Dancing Boy Compressor or :?: :?: :?: or DiscoDSP Nightshine and so on.

The point is to make the list of "quality" plugins available so that people at least have the information readily available and can then make up their own mind of what they want to use.

There is, although it doesn't have a top-level link: https://sites.google.com/site/kvrosc/re ... ed-plugins

Z, that is EXACTLY what I'm talking about. Perfect!

Question. What is your personal opinion of this list? Top quality stuff outside of what you'd have to pay for?

Post

http://bedroomproducersblog.com has lists of most categories of plugins. No need to curate yet another list in my opinion.

The problem with that list is that a lot of those plugin types aren't allowed. The list Z posted is perfect. It specifically says "recommended" for the challenge so every single one of them is allowed.

Both the BPB and OSC lists are not particularly whittled down to the best, though. The BPB list is definitely the more well maintained of the two. Both lists do include the plugins I would pick, but they have way too many that just aren't very good to sift through to find the best stuff. I have probably tried them all at one point or another. Perhaps I've missed a diamond in the rough. Of course, if you're curious what I would pick, you can always look at my submissions (I list them on the SC pages of the tracks, too).

As things stand today, I would definitely recommend things by VoS (I wish there were Mac ports!!), Vlad/g, TDR (which is both of them together and a better UI guy), and Freeverb 3; and for the rest, DAW plugins are usually good enough, IMO.

Of course, the OSC list isn't exhaustive what would be allowed. But certainly using a plugin on that list would be fine.

Well I am speechless. :-o For sure I would have thought that you were using some DSP that was unbeknown to the rest of us

Voted. Very tough though, which was really no surprise given my experience last month.

I ended up trying to give more 3s and 2s than I had originally so the votes would make more sense. Not sure I was successful in that, but at least its not all 4s and 5s like I had.

Anyway, thanks for the great songs everyone! :)
