No, it doesn't but ...really? ...FM outside of perfect octaves can get pretty wild. Switch off ratios and get loose with the detune and there is a lot of sonic territory there to explore

Yeah, and cross-mod will do something in that direction in PG8. But not every synth has those facilities. And it is significantly easier to use distortion than to work out how non-integer modulators are going to affect an FM sound – time that could be used to work on the rest of the track. That's why I think some clarity over the rules on distortion etc need fixing. I don't care which way it goes but the current situation isn't working that well because you are seeing these arguments over FX use.

Z, I don't think it's a matter of wanting to bend or break the rules, at least not in my case. I think it's more a matter of not having to worry about putting a track together that's going to get disqualified or, going in the other direction, putting one together out of fear that will never be good enough because not enough was done to it.

This system clearly gives an advantage to those who have been doing this longer because they already know what's allowed and what's not and how far you can push things. Relative newcomers like myself are going to be more careful, or more reckless, depending on their nature, and either have their track tossed out because they "didn't know" what was allowed or have their track score poorly because they were too afraid to do anything outside of the minimum, like myself.

How many "newbies" are going to nail that fine line right on the head?

So ultimately, you are now being rewarded for how many of these OSCs you've managed to slug your way through.

Case in point. My first few I used nothing more than a little delay, compression and limiting. I didn't dare go near filters, EQ or distortion because as I read the rules "nothing that colorizes the sound" I was sure that those FX did just that. As a result, I put myself at a terrible disadvantage those months.

Would it have mattered? In my case, probably not much because there was plenty else wrong with my tracks outside of FX. But maybe I would have ended up 20th that one month instead of 22nd.

Point is, every little bit helps. And without knowing just how far youc can take that "little bit" you're always going to be at a disadvantage against those who know exactly what they can and can't do.
