On the bright side for some dictionaries you have intelligent people to filter what they actually bother to put in the dictionary.

In many cases they view their work as documentation of the world around them. So in these cases when meanings are accurately sorted by frequency of occurrence (measured from written works or otherwise) and proper etymology is provided you're at least given the starting point needed for further research.

This is not always true however.

For example:
  • Wikipedia: "Art is a diverse range of human activities and the products of those activities, usually involving imaginative or technical skill."
  • Oxford: "The expression or application of human creative skill and imagination."
  • Dictionary.com: "The quality, production, expression, or realm, according to aesthetic principles, of what is beautiful, appealing, or of more than ordinary significance."
The difference in quality between these sources should be clear. Objective, objective, subjective.

My conclusion from this thread:

I am miserable seeing how much time some of you have to post nonsense (more or less). How on earth you have so much time and energy to spend and to write so many replies?

I want to have your job so i could spend some time (differently then self promotion of personal social character issues though)...

:x

I disagree.

Some words such as those in the list you quoted may be poor due to the requirement for subjective interpretation.

In other words the weight of effort is placed on the shoulders of the listener by the speaker, intentionally, due to the speaker's limited vocabulary and knowledge of the subject. As I described it already, this is the low road. It is best to know what one is speaking about and how to effectively express it first, rather than to rely upon the listener to interpret.

On the other hand, in many cases the listener is incapable of understanding the subject themselves, in which case it is pointless to say anything at all.

Then what really is the purpose of such speech?

I doubt it.

When you sit in front of a monitor for 12 hours or more per day working you are forced to take some breaks once in a while.

Walks are important to prevent the blood pooling in the legs and various related diseases afflicting the major organs of the body.

Spending some time to stare at birds, stumps or just the wall can come in very handy to prevent a psychotic break and slaughter of coworkers. :hyper:

I do not need words to enjoy the color of red, but I need words to identify it in my environment, seek it out and enjoy it with even more pleasure, because I am not only enjoying red but conceptually aware of that I am enjoying it.
You may not be pleased by red, but at least I can point to it and say, this is red and you would know what I am talking about. I may even be a little colorblind and though it would differ to you perceptually, it is still a solid and constant phenomenon we can share and talk about.
To this day I do not know what warm is supposed to be perceptually. I wish someone could post one or more examples where two otherwise similar sounds are differing in terms of the "warm" quality only.
E.g. does it have to be distorted or saturated or is “warm” something more/less/other?
Anyone care to provide an example?

Sorry, but you are coming across as a bot here, that for some reason doesn't communicate on the same wavelength as other humans, which by the way is your problem, not that of those other humans. If you are unable converse about a given topic, in this case sounds, using the vocabulary the rest have in an implied way agreed to use (such as the adjectives listed), there is not much point in discussing sound with you. It would limit you to discuss such things with a handful of fellow developers on your own terms, ideally in the respective sub-forum.

When certain words are widely used in a given context, there is a reason for that and it doesn't matter whether a few don't agree on those words, language and its usage is ruled by the masses and the result of an evolution. It's like with traffic lights. Red means stop and green means go, and that is based on the fact that the vast majority of people perceive a given wavelength as a certain color. There is no point for colorblind people to claim everyone else is wrong.

And if you simply don't find different sounds warm or cold or sharp or whatever to begin with, maybe you have cognitive issues :?

Art is a form of individual/group expression which is supported by an audience where the production itself has no specific market value or specific useful purpose; the market value of a certain production (or replica) is determined by its admiration: the eye of the beholder/buyer when it comes to a certain production/activity.

I know it is a bit unfriendly, but then again, we are talking to someone who considers most other people stupid, which actually makes me seem friendly 8)

I mean, if someone thinks there is no point in calling a sound warm, that also rules out using the comparative warmer, right? So if I confront a person with two sounds, a wide slightly detuned soft pad and a distorted sync sound with resonance to the max, and he or she says one does not sound warmer than the other, I guess I would have to doubt that person's faculties.
