Here's another thing about "presentation". Sometimes I just don't understand someone's song. It's like way over my head, or outside my listening zone. A picture or song title, and especially description, will help me understand what they were trying to make. This could make a big difference in how I appreciate their song.

Yes! Exactly: a well thought out title and appropriate artwork are helpful to guide the listener's mindset. Titles like "some random track I made" are just not helpful to help anyone understand what it is they're listening to.

It's not about the glitz, it's about telling a story with the music.

So I take it your not fans of Autechre/Aphex twin ?
We are bombarded with PR/adverts etc all the time, its nice sometimes to close down and just listen no.
Man is least himself when he talks in the first person. Give him a mask, and he'll show you his true face

That's true. I, personally, used to love listening to Aphex Twin's music (I would put various albums on quietly while I went to sleep every night and a couple of his made their way into rotation, along with Goldie and many others) and the Autechre I've heard I've liked. But, I think even Aphex Twin's music had some underlying meaning, even if it was simply to convey an emotion (or maybe insanity, sometimes).

But today things are definitely different. We don't usually have albums, songs aren't listened to in succession from the same artist, so you might as well use all the tools available to convey the music you have at your disposal.

I think that what you had to say about presentation is valuable and something I should take to heart. Not so much about points, because that's not what this all about to me, you've suffered through some of my tracks. But I like the idea of preparing the listener for what they're about to embark on and never thought about getting them in the mood so to speak.

Someone mentioned Dirony (I think that's his handle) and even though his genre was usually not my cup of tea, his work and now that I reflect on that his presentation as well was almost always in my estimation in the 4 or 5 range.

Hi all,

Here is my track with MUX:
https://soundcloud.com/photonic-1/photonic-aurora

30 instances of MUX in Reaper v5.0

Dynamics: TDRFeedBackCompressor, GClip, ReaComp, FerricTDS
Filter: ReaEQ, MQ57
Delays: Ixox Delay
Reverb: EpicVerb, FreeverbToo
Satturation: FerricTDS
Stereo: GStereo, MAutopan, MidSideMangler
Analyzer: Span, TT Dynamic Range Meter

Dynamik Range according TT Dynamic Range Meter: DR=13

This track is an orchester orientated track again. I got inspired by some of the presets, which I used with more or less modifications. But all drums and synth sound are made from scratch. I never came into the flow of sound design like often with other synths. It is sure a question of personal perception if you feel comfortable with a synth or not. The possibilities of this synth are great, no questions. So when I was pleased with the sounds I spent most of the time for the composition.

I could see that also some other participants had some trouble with MUX. Me too! Right from the beginning I saw sometimes that I could not connect the modwheel with the LFO-amount, which I need for controlled vibrato. And the more instances I used the more I recognized muted tracks and also hanging notes. In the end I had to save and close Reaper several times per session to bring everything back to normal condition. For mixing of the track, I rendered all tracks and mixed the pure WAV-files.

Ding, ding, ding, no more calls. We have a winner.

I did the same - rendered the files down to stems with no fx, including the MUX reverbs etc ... then added fx and mixed. :tu:

Is anyone mixing in MuLab --- other Mac users? I'm finding it a little frustrating and would appreciate any tricks or tips! I am also running into some performance issues and wonder if anyone else is experiencing intermittent distortion?

Thanks.

Yes. I am trying this. Right now. Performance is pretty good (2013 MBP i7 here). I only wish envelopes were like every other DAW, it's making this process very slow for me, too. Not getting any distortion, really, but I'm using my normal plugs on the master (Nova67p, TDR Kotelnikov, Limter 6). Didn't end up doing too much craziness. Not as much as I wanted to.

Wow. MUX goes deep. Real deep. So deep, in fact, that I'm just now surfacing from my epic synth creation journey and am now about ready to start a song and WAIT IT'S ALREADY THE 27th?!?!? HOW LONG HAVE I BEEN IN THERE?!?!?

Post

Same here. Trying to keep it simple but mixing is a challenge. I normally use Logic built in EQ's, compressors, etc all of which sound great. I had a problem with the TDR plugins - they would leave a white box on the screen when I close them so I had to switch to some other free VST's, which is kind of frustrating, although I like limiter 6. I'm on a 2013 iMac and keep getting some weird intermittent distortion. The Nova67p looks interesting.... I'm finding the mixing process of working with racks to be kind of cumbersome, especially the lack of normal fader automation.

I have gain automation on almost every track.
Let me know if you want it - I'll drop the project into dropbox for you.

Is there a way to get the envelope editor to show up WHILE the arrange view is visible? E.g. so you can see where you're editing?
