Synclavier V is VST of the year so far.
A heaping dose of outrageously goofy synth tracks, scores and chiptunes.

I really don't understand what's the problem of the installation size?! Graphics or not! The whole installation is not more than 5GB!! Even 10 years ago, that wasn't a problem. For the SSD disks, that is a problem maybe with 128 GB, but how many have this size?!
Using: Cubase Pro 15, Reason 13, Tascam US-4x4HR, MODX6, DM12D, LaunchKey 49, Yamaha guitar(Pacifica 612v) and bass (BB234) and some virtual instruments and synths.

Probably majority of people. Many might even have 60 or 80 GB system drives.EnGee wrote:I really don't understand what's the problem of the installation size?! Graphics or not! It's just the question of shoddy programming, of general waste of computing resources and of using inelegant solutions that feel like amateur hacks that a big company like Arturia should be above (but obviously is not).
Also look at this from the perspective of doing backups. If you want to back up a full system drive and maybe even upload it to the cloud then 5 GB of pointless bitmap files is a huge problem.

I don't know, but probably still quite some people. Not everybody can afford bigger HDs or new computers all the time, for instance like me, but I'm in a very comfortable situation. So I try not to measure other people by my possibilities (and sometimes I still forget about it).EnGee wrote:I really don't understand what's the problem of the installation size?! Graphics or not! Nevertheless, I also guess it'd be possible to shrink that size to a much lower one.
Another point is the impact to bugs, if code is not well written. I'm no developer, but I worked in a software company as a tester. We had several issues because of the "blown up" (it was "grown" historically) architecture, of not properly de-coupled modules, "old" framework etc. While rewriting the architecture, creating more stable frameworks, and de-coupling modules, the software size also become somehow smaller. And faster! And bugs were easier to fix without side effects into other modules, functions, etc. Plus bugs did less influence the whole application, when crashing not everything was crashing.

Really?! Majority? Many?! What kind of system is that? For a music production or a hobby?robotmonkey wrote:Probably majority of people. Please give me an example of both (it won't be difficult, right? As many have such systems). Let's start with your system

Me neither, my only problem is that the graphics in the Solina are blurry, but if HD graphics take up more room I rather expected that and it's a price worth paying.EnGee wrote:I really don't understand what's the problem of the installation size?! Apart from counting the size of installed bitmaps are their also guys making music with this fine tools
I mean, we speak about 2016 and music production and not a simple text editor. Everybody knows that some synth needing resources. But who cares if it sounds good, is easier to use and help us to make great music?

Most people I know have SSD-s no larger than 128GB. Some of them were early adopters when SSD prices were quite expensive and so they have even smaller SSD system drives. It's mainly because a lot of the people have systems that are couple of year old and they are not limited by things like RAM and CPU and GPU. At that time SSD drives were not cheap and many of the people who opted for SSD have drives that were affordable at that time. So space is a concern.EnGee wrote: Really?! Majority? Many?! My own system? It's a bit over two years old (or is it three already? can't remember) and even does not have a SSD drive. When I put my current system together a SSD drive with a decent size and from a decent manufacturer did not seem a good deal. Instead I opted for 10K RPM Western Digital VelociRaptor 500GB drives for system and recording and Western Digital Black 640 GB drives for additional storage. It was a much better value for money at the time. I have yet to put in an SSD drive because I do not feel limited by my current setup. It's also very stable so reinstalling everything does not seem that appealing at the moment. But, the 5GB of pointless bitmaps would be a problem even for me because my system partition is 80GB with 10GB free currently. So I would have to resize my partitions (which is easy to do but still).
I absolutely can't stand excuses for lazy and inefficient programming and wasteful software design even if system resources are not as scarce as they used to be. That processors are super fast these days is not a viable excuse for not optimizing one's code, and that HDDs have become bigger is not an excuse for crapping all over storage with pointless files. A waste is a waste.

Exactly. I have heard enough from self-ascribed world class coders, graphic experts and audio professionals with their scant 64 GB SSD drives and paradoxically well endowed and bloviated egos. Lets talk about the sound. This is getting ridiculous.

I understand the criticism for the sound or bugs (in any instrument). I already wish they fix this annoying preset change sound burst in some presets (ARP2600V), but for now I just put a limiter and be careful with old presets. I'm also absolutely with any bug solving.
Yes, the installation can be better for people with limited space by putting all the resolutions as check boxes, and the user can choose "All" or individual resolutions that suit him/her. This is not that difficult to do I guess, say you want to install two sizes only, then when you want to resize the GUI, only the two are available and all others are grayed out (for example). Anyway, this can be requested in a friendly manner and not in "F#$%#ing" style.
IMO of course!
@robotmonkey:
as I read your post while reviewing mine, I will just add this:
I don't think your partitions are done right. You have 10GB free, and as far as I know, you should have at least the half size empty, so you should ideally have 40GB free (more or less). How you will deal with future installations/updates ..etc?
For your problem, I suggest to resize the partitions and have more room for the system partition.
So, those people you know have only one SSD with 128 GB. Right? Nothing else? When they chose their system (or hard disk), they wanted only few instruments that have small sizes? Again how many are those (number)? You are not one of them, not me, who then? Why not let them speak for themselves?

are people here also startin to eat up everything?
not only it's 5gb and if you got more of those crap installers it sums up. i install my products on a Different drive as i want to use my system drive for the system and no entertainment. cant you please think a little bit instead being just naive?
i observe this mentality a lot more recent times.... who cares mentality...
vsts get shinier bigger powrful but the coding etc. gets worse. bravo!

Naive? Ok, I'm a naive. Let's learn from you. Tell us about your problem, or your hard disk(s) problem.Caine123 wrote:are people here also startin to eat up everything?

Do you also have SSD with 128 GB or less? and have only 10 GB free?
List the main programs in your system partition and the OS size, then list the free space you have. Also tell me, if you have installed all Kontakt libraries (and samples) in another disk? Just prove your point through explaining your system! I'm a naive and need more info!

Actually there's nothing wrong with that size. There's absolutely no need to have half of the space free. 10GB from 80GB is perfectly fine as the recommended size is 10-15%. I will probably gain 2-3 GB any given time by clearing the Temp folders and Update Cache. As far as installation is concerned there won't be anything to install as my list of software has been pretty much the same for several years. Of course I might occasionally install something but I just can't see any monster installations in my foreseeable future. And indeed, I could resize the partition If I need to.EnGee wrote: I don't think your partitions are done right.
