If I like to replace my Waves plugins by others because of this WUP thing, what would be the best choices?

Wich ones ? there is so much you need to specify. Some are pretty unique and hard to replace like Wavestune your only options are Melodyne and Autotune AFAIK. More expensive also.
I'm also always looking for alternatives to Waves because of the WUP and the installer wich sometimes messes up with Reaper's plugin folder. You have to rescan all the plugins to install one Waves plugin ! Takes 20 minutes to install a small plugin.

Boone777 is right, there are so many that there isn't a single developer who could replace them all. I did this years ago, for the exact same reason (WUP) and landed on Fabfilter, which made sense for me since the Waves plugins I had I used mostly for the utilitarian stuff (EQ's, compressors and the like).

What do you mean by WUP thing? Are you talking about their copy protection system?martinjuenke wrote:If I like to replace my Waves plugins by others because of this WUP thing, what would be the best choices?

Waves update plan. You need to pay like every 2 years to be able to resell them and also update the plugins to new functionalitys. And it's not cheap in many case it costs as much or more than the plugin itself. Its topped off at something like 200$ or 300$ to update evey plugins. It makes you want to put your money elsewhere if you ask me. I personnaly don't buy anything over 29$ and wait for deals. But now they will have to work very hard to get me interested into buying some more as I already have everything I ever wanted from Waves.

Yeah which ones are you looking to replace? Waves do hundreds of different plugins for all kinds of bread+butter or specialist tasks. Ofcourse there are higher quality alternatives out there, and often even cheaper too... but without knowing what you're looking for it's hard to recommend anything.

It's a tricky one that doesn't have a simple answer.
There are some emulations you can find alternative versions out there, like their classic eqs and compressors, SSL, Neve, API. They won't sound quite the same.
Then there are emulations that are almost impossible to replace, especially natively. Like HLS, PIE, DBX, BSS.
Then there are digital processors that you can find elsewhere, some even prettier looking, but the sound will be different.
Then there are the unique things you can't find anywhere also. Like their Abbey Road stuff, H-Series, Vitamin, Parallel Particals, Cobakt Saphira, Signature Series, etc. That Manny Marroquin suite is pretty unique and awesome.
Thing is you only need to pay WUP when there is an upgrade worth paying for. You actually don't need WUP for most updates,
The only WUP I have paid for in the last few years is to upgrade to Element 2... which only cost me $10. WUP isn't nearly as scary as what people think it is.
Our biggest worry is paying to go to Version 10 if and when that happens. But then you pay so much more upgrading single plugins with anyone else!!

The only time you need WUP is when you want to resell your plugins. Look at that as a licence transfer fee. It's usually much cheaper than many other developers are asking.Boone777 wrote:Waves update plan. You do not need wup for updates. Pretty much all my Waves plugins are out of WUP and I just updated all of them to v9.91.

Point updates have been free, but I'd be surprised if the jump to v10 didn't require WUP to be in place. Sounds like we might find out sooner rather than later.
Also, there's at least 2 resellers I know of (everyplugin and Audio Deluxe) offering WUP at around $200 for the cap.

I wouldn't mind paying them the $300 WUP which is cap. After like 6 years later I'm cool with that. UAD charge me a minimum of 75 bucks to upgrade and more per plugin. I can't complain 300 USD per 300 plugins.

It really depends on the quantity of plugins when it's only a few it's not very interesting. Like I wanted to sell WavesTune for 50$ but WUP was 35$ if I recall correctly so I decided to keep it. I got myself Melodyne wich I prefer I thought I could get some money back from WavesTune but not really..maybe at some point I'll update them all and sell them then again it's not worth much if I have to pay 300$ in the first place.
