I apologize if this is in the wrong section; I'm never 100% sure where to post these things. :P

Anyway: You know the classic Sonic games for the Sega Genesis? Specifically, the music from them? I want to try and find percussion samples that sound like the ones used there, except, you know, not bit-crushed to death. I haven't had any luck yet, so I figured I'd ask around. (The snare from Sonic 1 and 2 is top priority, but it would be awesome to find some of the other stuff too.)

Here's some examples of each game's percussion. They're not the best quality in the world (and some of them still have the PSG instruments in them), but they were the best I could find:

If anyone finds anything that sounds even remotely close, please let me know. Thanks in advance!

Load up a snare and some redux fx reduce the bit rate ,blend in some noise to the snare sample as well.

I don't know what you're asking for. Some of that percussion was sampled, some of it is synthesized. Without the bit reduction it would sound completely different.

Yeah,as has been said these are samples that have been encoded using some kind of primitive encoding engine (i know nintendo used BRR,not sure what Sega used)you can replicate these sort of drums with a gate, decimation (samplerate reduction and bitcrushing),and a tiny bit of slew limiting.the reason for the gate and slew limiting is that the encoding methods on these old 16 bit consoles would remove parts of the envelopes when encoded onto the consoles chip.you'd lose a bit of attack and the tail would taper off sooner.there'd also be a lot of quantization distortion in the sustained part of the envelope.in theory the bitcrushing is supposed to do this, but most plugin bit crushers don't really do anything to the envelope itself (because it's not encoding,it's just resampling a live audio stream)

Just remembered there is also companding as well, that's the compression you hear on the drums(it's a side effect of companding not a function of it.the companding is to expand the program material whilst keeping the noise at an optimal level but a lot of these older companding algos actually had some cool unwanted side effects on the material) mostly but i don't know of many plugins that do companding other than Satin

If you just want the similar effects, there is a Snes or Nes sampler knocking about for windows that will encode one shot sampled drums etc into BRR
