I could be completely wrong, but perhaps it takes too much time to instantiate and initialize additional voices to do it dynamically?fluffy_little_something wrote:I never understood why one has to set polyphony manually with many synths. Why doesn't the synth simply use as few voices as necessary and add voices whenever there is demand? Does it take so long to activate an additional voice?Teksonik wrote:Indeed. Those two settings effect the sound and playing response so it seems logical to have them saved with each preset.
But does anyone turn off Optimize Polyphony ? I'm wondering if there is a case where having it off would be beneficial. I know there are some patches such as bass and lead where Optimize won't make a difference but I can't think of a reason why having it off would benefit the patch at all. Thoughts ?
Am I the only who is not afraid of 32 note or 64 note poly choices ? I know it would come at a cost of CPU cycles but some pads just need a bit more. I find the voice stealing algo a bit...."harsh" I guess for the lack of a better term even with Optimize selected. Sometimes when playing complex patches I've had the engine either stop responding to the next note on or there is an odd drop in volume.
Thorn: Dmitry Sches' new synth!

Thanks StefkenStefken wrote:Well done!! Some nice sound designing going on here.
I have just updated a lot of the presets, increasing the voices to 16 where the preset is a poly. I don't know why I kept the number so low on a lot of them!

Love your work Rich!
I think you should start using Thorn for drums too!!
I'm gonna get a drum patch bank together, i'll send it to you when i finish it, but I'm sure you can make some terrific drums with Thorn! man i dig that synth.
i had 10 instances running yesterday, 24/48, my CPU was under 30%... i'm so happy to have such an amazing sounding soft-synth that's so versatile, and so (generally) kind on the processor. I feel I really don't need any other synth now, for 88% of all synth duties.

Yeah I had thought about attempting to create some drums. I can sort of do kicks and very basic hi-hats are just white noise, but snares and other percs, I have no idea! I look forward to seeing what you create in regards to drums.

Yeah I guess, but if you put the voices at 16 then I suppose the end user can choose how many notes in a chord...maybezvenx wrote: cpu that's why

Yeah it does make quite a difference. It's a difficult thing. Either way (low voices/high voices) the end user will probably have to tweak to suit their needs/cpu.zvenx wrote:One of your pads, five note chord.....duplicated track, one at poly 16, poly 8 and poly 4.

It's aimed at Tempest users, but is still a GREAT resource for patch creation, especially drums!
