An example I did during Beta of Virta:
https://soundcloud.com/thomas-helzle/virta-mantra
It starts with a pure sample from Earth Moments and then transitions into a "Virta-mangled" voice.
You can also hear some of the effect being "played" on the keyboard live.

Something you could also consider is a realtime audio to midi effect like imitone or JamOrigins Midi-Guitar which allows you to do a lot of cool stuff with instruments or midi-aware effects like NI Prism FX, especially in a DAW like Bitwig where you can have any device or plugin in any order inside one (hybrid) track. It's audio rate modulators alone give you a ton of options for mangling.

Rhythmic effects like Dmitry Sches "Tantra" could also be interesting, depending on your definition of "Mangling".

NI Molekular would also be one of my recommendations (wait for a sale though).

Melda Granular is worth a try as well.

Cheers,

Tom

Well, it's a nod to the first fully synthesized singing (with the method of formant synthesis on a computer, in the 60s), a monumental moment in electronic and computer music history.
It's also the song that HAL sings in odyssey 2001 when he's dying.

So the demo is actually pretty good... if you know some history.
Check out Ircam Trax though, it can do a lot.
And maybe you oughta be a little bit more specific what do you mean with mangling.

All you need is a good stutter effect or a sampler and modulate a pitch shifter/formant effect like little alter boy.
Only one one of those i mentioned was partially vocoder (izotope vocal synth). And I would've suggested iZotope Stutter Edit or Illformed Glitch2, but those aren't really vocal oriented but general glitch effects, and "mangling" can mean a lot of things.
Hey cool, I'm learning stuff. :D

Madrona should add this to the demo on their website imo.

Polyverse Manipulator and I Wish are both excellent.

Honestly if the OP wants to lose themselves in FSU territory then they should really check out what's in the Reaktor UL.

Seems like any cheapo effects processor can easily destroy a vocal beyond recognition. To me, the question is whether you still want anyone to understand what you're singing or saying.
Definitely. Many simple effects that you may already have. An easy way to make vocals intelligable even after a serious treatment with effects is to mix a bit of un- (or only slightly) processed voice back in.

VocalSynth is a good place to start, or just generally running audio through some eq filter and distortion of choice.

You can really get out there with Unfiltered Audio's SpecOps, but it would be too easy to decimate it beyond description. So you'd want to be careful how you use it.

:) No worries. Looking forward to hearing what you do with it! Soma certainly make unique toys... I have their Lyra Eight synth and it is amazing.
