Any argument about "copycat" works regardless of its basis is entirely due to a radical misconception about creativity in general.

Where does artistry end and "copycat" begin? At the beginning.

"I stood on the shoulders of giants" does not refer to single "god-like" individuals. It is referring to the massive pile of decaying corpses of your ancestors. Have a little respect when you stand up.

The dividing line runs parallel to that which divides erotic from porn.

Or the line which divides all living things from our universal common ancestor.

The difference lies within the intent ie an anticipated outcome that is intended or that guides your planned actions.

Except this time we are being duped into a market survey. This may or may not affect the way the discussion should pan out.

it's so true.
you know - "I'm never gonna turn out like my dad"... yeah whatever.

I've actually been enjoying some of the new [egads] "future" genres, and even some of the [err] EDM.
It's just like any genre, it takes time to wade through the turds.
the unfortunate thing in my opinion, is the obvious easy access to technology has bumped the ratio of turds to diamonds... but it's every genre really, it's just that "EDM" and these 'future' types are largely based on harsh sounds, so the turd wading is often actually physically damaging to the ears.
