In "SexyBack" and "Bad Romance," there's this high pitched drum. What is it?

How to do this, that and the other. Share, learn, teach. How did X do that? How can I sound like Y?

In Timbaland's SexyBack (the one with Justin Timberlake) and in Lady Gaga's bad romance, there's this high pitched drum...

Is it a tuned Tom?

It's a sound that's in a lot of Timbaland songs and in Bad Romance...

I'm not sure what it is... sounds a bit computer-y...

Anyone know what I'm talking about???

I've been trying to find a sample that sounds like this for a LONG time...

:dog: :)

I want to use a sample that sounds close if not exactly the same. I think it might be a MPC3000 sound or something else maybe?!?

Post

It might be from an Ensoniq ASR10.

Sounds more like hi pitched conga than tom, you can easily get this sound with something like Klopfgeist from Logic and probably anything similar to it.

OK, ... so I use FL and a PC... what samples/VST can I get to do this?

Also, in Bad Romance, it's almost like a bleep from a click track that's pitched... any sound/sample similar to this would be great...

Really, I'd like a sample I can just alter up or down pitch wise...

Thanks for your help so far Zexila.... any more help would be appreciated...

There must be some drum/perc synth preset you can tweak and play chromatically, take a look, there's always some tom sound preset to be found in plenty of factory synth banks.

Try 808 conga. :tu:

Thanks for your help...

although I'm still not sure this is the sound I'm looking for...

have you heard the high pitched drum that's in both Bad Romance and SexyBack?

Heard in SexyBack more clearly, it's not that busy thing like Bad Romance, but it's similar sound, more processed in Bad Romance tho, so take that into account too when comparing.

What did you tried so far?

I tried the C4 conga, pitched at D5 and D6 in a pattern. And it almost sounds right...

and compared to the lady gaga song bad romance, the instrument comes in at about 38 seconds in https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qrO4YZeyl0I

and the lady gaga instrument sounds a lot sharper... like more intense.... mine sounds duller...

it sounds a little bit like the sexyback drum, which is the first drum to come into the song...

Oh shit! Didn't mean to post the whole video in the reply...

Well, it still doesn't sound quite the same....

You will never get the same thing that easily, settle with close enough or learn how get that sound from scratch using some capable synth or drum machine.

Quite like this one, hope for Timbo's comeback, he actually makes music worth listening.

Uh, interestingly, that song doesn't have the instrument I'm thinking of...

At like 18 seconds, there's a KICK

there's a synth sound

and there's this OTHER drum... maybe a conga sample... that I hear. I just want a sample like that...

Is that so hard to ask for? In a world of problems and complicatons... I just want a simple sample that is exactly the same as a Timbaland/Lady Gaga song... WHY!?

Sounds like a synthetic perc hit from an old Roland unit

The Bad Romance sound is claves. The Sexyback... who knows? Could be any kind of high pitched percussion hit, or even synthesized. Maybe try sampling yourself hitting some hard plastic?
Incomplete list of my gear: 1/8" audio input jack.
