Hi, folks.

A client has DEMANDED I use the sound found in Snap!'s Rhythm is a Dancer" for a project. Demanded! He said a rare butterfly from Nepal will die if I don't do so. More importantly, he suggested I wouldn't get paid if I failed.

I looked this matter up here on KVR but the post I found (from 2011) doesn't really help. I've also tried contacting the original producers, but to now avail. Finally, I reached out to Rob Papen. He *almost* nailed it.

The main FM synths I have are FM8 and BlueII. I also have Zebra2 and Bazille, as well as a few others at my disposal. But my sound design skills are lacking. Might all y'all lend me a hand?

Thanks!!!

Seems like complex sound of mixed presets, low frequencies focus of LP filter for sure, maybe delayed attack of the filter or some distortion, square and sine wave probably, it's 1992 saw wave still not invented ...it will be nice if we have some raw preset to work with, cuz personaly i don't recreate old things, prefer to do fresh stuff - will analyze when have time and will try to do something like it with sm1,it could be nice project if other designers participate as well with their favorite synths.
Man that's my number one dance song of all time, you ask me to ruin my teen memories here :):):)

The producers were beta testers for Waldorf so you're looking at the Microwave, which is wavetables, but they may have had an earlier variant that isn't easily available today. You could try the software PPG reincarnations. But honestly you could get close enough with the FM synths you have and some filtering. Look up the Lately bass—it's not in this song but it's similar. Consider layering patches. Also keep in mind that while it's an awesome bass patch, it's relatively simply and sounds bigger in this specific mix (notice it's never isolated, and its bottom drops out a bit when the kick comes back in to make room for it). So the rest of your song/mixing is going to heavily influence how it's perceived. This song was a monster hit because it was crafted exceptionally well.

Also, when clients have impossible requirements, realize you're never going to satisfy them. Not just for this project but for all future projects. It's important to educate them on what to reasonably expect and have them agree on that. Your hope now is that the deliverable is undeniably and holistically satisfactory.

It was quite famous for its bass sounds back in the days, wasn't it?

Just tried these in FM8. Sound good imho.

It's most likely a layered Yamaha TX81z patch. Definitely some Lately Bass (classic TX bass everywhere back then) in there, sounds like something else (FM) on top with a bit more punch/shorter decay.

Yes, digital wavetable synthesis with analog filters, the best of both worlds.

It is not a Tx or any Fm bass.... not a lately either... it was a wave table bass wave from a PPG hardware synth and it was called "raid" bass.

Made in Reason. Whole song. Not the same but really nice cover and keyboard playing.

And i thought Eurodance wouldn't be any popular these days! :)

As i said in the old thread i was playing a PPG 2.2 and this bass preset came up that made me think "Hey that's the bass sound from Rythm is a dancer". I took a sample of it. I'll see if i can locate it and upload shortly.

Can't guarantee it's the exact same sound but that's what i thought at the time.

Just check some old stuff about similarity of impact and character and if you bet on substractive way with some classic square-sine-saw forms there is endless possibilities for variations - probably not even close to original as structure but if it sound good and it's usable in d mix it's ok - some video which also could be helpful for interested in subtractive sound design :
