Nice,

It's funny but when I'm reaching for a more "80's" type jazz fusion tone I'll use the "AC" setting on my Yamaha THR amp. The AC is based on a Vox AC30 nice mid punch which works great with semi hollow body (335 ish) type guitars.
I've never tried one of those THR amps. I was tempted for a while.Once had a Fender Mustang I, but it didn't suit my needs. I've got Amplitube an Scuffham Amps, so I am sorted for sims. The AC tone on my new amp is to die for. I have yet to play any sim that can beat an all-tube amp, and my AC15 sounds absolutely gorgeous, even using the attenuator @ 1.5 watts.

And it truly shines on my Casinos and my Ibanez Artcore Custom. All this time, I'd never knowingly played through a VOX, and was never really satisfied with Fenders, Peaveys, or Marshalls. The VOX does all I need it to do. I can get lost for a couple of hours playing through it, which hasn't happened in a long, long time.

the vox a series are beautiful sounding amps, so long as you get a working one :hihi:
i was so happy when you got that sorted, not to mention it was a good fit for you, you needed a boost after your op n stuff 8)

Thanks. It was a truly shitty winter for us. The flu/operation, the flu again... I was basically a shut-in until last month. Thing is, you get used to a cage, and you no longer think about getting out of it. I had to force myself to get out of the house.

The amp is my retail therapy for all that. I also sold a Taylor guitar and a Blackheart Killer Ant to pay for it. It is a worthy trade. The Taylor was a nice guitar, but I have lots of nice guitars. Don't really feel any remorse. I am getting a lot more enjoyment out of the amp. When I started out playing electric, some 44 years ago now, I was playing through this little, cheap Japanese import (when Japanese import was a term of derision), and it had the sweetest sound when cranked. I made some great recordings with just that: probably no more than a watt or two, an 8" speaker, and that's it. The AC15 top boost channel reminds me of that overdriven tube tone, only better. It really has made playing electric guitar fun, again. :tu:

I changed the blend pot of my #1 Strat to a 1Meg Linear and it's pretty much perfect now. The linear pot gives me more control at the lower range of the blend, which is where I need it the most. Now I can dial in just a little bit of fatness on the bridge or just a little bit of bite on the neck or neck+middle.

Post

cool... is that a 'B' pot then?

I'ts funny...I've kind of wanted one of these ever since I got into Rush as a kid in 1985 (Geddy Lee was playing them at the time). Every time I contemplated buying one, though, I hemmed and hawed and opted for something else instead, whether it was a later-model XQ or something altogether different. Finally decided to give one of the originals a go.

Nice! What do you think of it? I got a Hohner version of the Steinberg guitar and it's pretty awful.

so, on the steinberger you've got dual volumes, and then tones stacked in one position? or something like that?

...got another davison, this time for $51:

The original article is a very different thing than the wooden Hohners or Spirit basses (I've had a couple). Super clear, tight, defined sound that's consistent all over the neck with a nice midrange bark to cut through and sustains forever. Pretty effortless to record - you just plug it in and the Steinberger sound we remember from Tears for Fears' "Head Over Heels" (as one example) is right there. I've had a few other basses with active EMG pickups, thinking it would get me close to a Steinberger sound with a more traditional design and feel, but I can say now they only get you part of the way there. It seems the one-piece graphite composite design does significantly contribute to the sound.

It does feel a bit strange/unfamiliar the way it hangs off you with the pivot plate. I was expecting the design to cause the first frets to be a markedly longer reach, but they're actually not much further away than on a typical Fender bass. It's just a bit odd the way it feels like it's "floating" in front of you. I expect I'll get used to it, though. After one day with it, the recorded sound makes me wish I'd just gotten one two decades ago instead of wasting money on a lot of the other basses I've owned.

(Btw, for the other poster, the controls are master volume, blend and stacked bass/treble.)

I've always wanted a Steinberger bass, very jealous! I had the Spirit and it was a pile of crap, worst bass I have ever owned. Always really wanted an original all carbon fibre jobby. How much did it set you back? I nearly bought one in Japan and always regret not doing so. Can't believe no one makes the "proper" ones any more.

I picked mine up for $2,250. It's gotten harder to find them priced that low, so I felt like I had to jump on it. Putting it in perspective, though, it's undoubtedly less than what they would cost new if they were being produced now.

I guess the closest thing now in production is the Streamline by Status Graphite. The Streamline is probably a bit of an improvement over the Steinberger in terms of ergonomics, though the Streamline has a somewhat different sound. Maybe partly due to a different carbon fiber (the Streamlines are pretty lightweight, whereas the Steinbergers are made of a very dense composite and are very heavy for something so compact), and of course different pickups, different electronics.

I also always wanted a 'berger bass. That is so bad-ass
congrats !

Thanks dude, that's about what I was expecting for price. Yes, have had the Status Graphite site bookmarked for over a decade, but I just hate their design. The really small one may be OK, but it still looks too plasticky somehow. I'll probably just be forced to buy the real thing some day!
