Does anyone else like slightly unconventional drum synths/machines?
Obviously, I program many of my drum sounds from scratch, but does anyone else love strange machines that incorporate unconventional sounds and manipulations into them?
Some of my favorites are:
Ironhead:

Impakter

Too bad they are all 32 bit, but they do some really amazing things.

Yeah ... It's a shame they were all abandonded. I used Impaktor and Ironhead a lot "back in the day" ...
Autobeat & DrumK 2 from K-Devices are worth a look if you use Live (and M4L)

Anarchy Rhythms takes an audio input and applies a matrix of amplitude modulation, bandpass filtering, feedback loops, internal oscillation and compression, allowing you to compose rhythmic patterns from the sonic timbre of the audio input.

Xoxos was/is pretty much the king of unconventional percussion. His website has been squatted since he retired, but I imagine many of the freebies will be mirrored around the net somewhere.

Any chance you have experience with DrumK 2? Looks intriguing, but i can't find out if you can have beat divisions outside the bog-standard 4/8/16 paradigm of dance music. About half the time i'm not playing in 4/4.thecontrolcentre wrote:Yeah ... It's a shame they were all abandonded. I used Impaktor and Ironhead a lot "back in the day" ...

Reaktor. It comes with a bunch of interesting sequencers and drum synths, but the user library is chock full of cool things.

I think it is the random nature of them that makes them interesting. In the beginning, it was random tuning behavior in analog oscillators. Then things like probability calculations like in the Psychic Modulation drum machines, then morphing and blending tools, or hybrid oscillators that could be morphed like Zebra2, Synthmaster, Rapid and such...also Glitch and glitching sequencers that are in Thorn. It is the unexpected that makes things fascinating.

Maybe this is an opportunity to mention what I feel is the most underrated drum machine and it's actually freeware which is RitMix by Soundbridge. It's a drum machine vst with 16 pads, you can load your own samples, it has a sequencer which can go up to 64 steps, and a bunch of effects that can be randomized like panning and pitch shifting for each sample on each step so you can get some crazy results. It also had 16 outs and you can even have a separate out for the wet mix.

RitMix is insane for both it's ease of use, modulation effects, and the facts it's freeware. The only downside is it can be a bit glitchy but that's to be expected from freeware that ambitious and fun to use. I just don't understand why nobody else knows about this beast. I think maybe people think you have to use it inside of SoundBridge but you don't I use it in Reaper as my go too for drums.
