Looking to see what is out there, either free or paid.

i have

Satin - maybe isn't quite extreme enough - the wow seems fast even at low tape speeds.

Reaktor VHS - probably more the level of warblyness I'm looking for - but it's VHS and of course Reaktor, never my favourite thing to use. I've also got Vintape but I can't remember what that sounds like.

Cubase - Magneto II - that doesn't seem to do worn or warbly.

Any others out there - I think Audio Thing's Reels would probably do it.

I was able to get a warbly tape FX sound on my synth pad sound in this track I just made by using a tweaked preset in Byome. https://soundcloud.com/user-841453413/s ... f-the-past

Funny enough I loaded up Satin thinking of using it for that purpose, but I found the same problem as you.

Audio Things reels seems much cheaper than Byome, so it might be the better option.

Havn't tried this but I'm tempted to buy it to see how well it sounds.

oh thanks, some great suggestions there - I think the XLN things is probably a bit too much for what I want to spend, as is Byome. Echomelt looks interesting as does Reelbus - I'm going to demo them now together with Audiothing's Reel.

oh, there is a thing you can do with satin, though--make a single tap delay with 100% mix, and no feedback or filtering, and then use the tap's built-in oscillator to really lay on the drift.

If you are on windows, Wow & Flutter does exactly what it says on the tin. Combined with something like Airwindows Iron Oxide or ToTape5, you can get a nice, grungy, warbly tape sound for free.

I thought Wow & Flutter is 32bit only? I used to use it and it was great but as I'm on Cubase I can do 64 bit only.

Our plugin, Wow Control, was built for exactly this. It has a deep randomization section for warbling and other wild tape effects.

Going to echo a number of things people have said here. Getting the old degraded tape sound was a holy grail of mine for a while, so I've considered quite a few options.

TB Reelbus : Very good. V. 3 had a model called Old Rusty Tape or some such. Chaining a bunch of these could get shit nice and grungy.

RC-20 : Also good, tho maybe not as authentic.

Izotope Vinyl : I chained this with an "old warbly tape" ensemble from the Reaktor user library (VinTape?) and a shitty old tape saturation sim as one of my first attempts. Sounded decent.

Goodhertz Wow Control : Sounds pretty good, does exactly what you're looking for.

Guitar Gadgets minitape : Good, if I remember correctly. Didn't use it much as I had other options I was already comfortable with.

Audiothing Reels : The Excalibur of degraded tape sims?? I honestly think this may be the best I've tried.
