Ditto.

Also (can't believe I forgot this one) Softube Tape is pretty damn sweet. Maybe 2nd best for me (or tied for second with a couple others). Open up the side panel to get things warbly. Sounds warm.
A well-behaved signature.

Ghz Wowcontrol and Audiothing Reels feel like they do this best to me. Softube tape and Black Rooster Magnetite are more high fidelity but also feature wow and flutter, and are very nice.

I just tried o make a warbly preset with BYOME. You can download the preset here, if you want.
This is what it sounds like with a few different macro settings on a simple Pianoteq thingy (the first one is dry):

The presets adds wow, flutter, filtering, dropouts, noise and saturation, all controllable via the macros.

Nice - I'm actually trying out the various plugins on Pianoteq myself. But I don't Byome and probably won't get it for a while.

For free (32 bit only) there's Unstable by De la Mancha ...

Yep, 32 bit synthedit. [fanboi] Honestly I forget this is still a problem for people, because Reaper's built in bridge is pretty solid. Ironic that Steinberg doesnt have proper VST support ;) [/fanboi]

Wow control is king for these type of effects in the plugin realm.

For those using Max for Live, there is a device called crap cassette which is useful for warbly grunge.

I use and like a lot of the plugins listed already. I’ll just throw out a few things that are a bit more off the beaten path.

Cableguys Timeshaper. Set it to a buffer a few measures long. Set the time shift at the beginning and end to be zero (no shift). Now add a single point in the middle and pull it down just a tiny bit. The result is a really fantastic slow pitch detune effect like an LFO.

Audioease Speakerphone. This is great but rather pricey. It can do the detuning, the worn out and scratchy, and a million other kinds of lofi goodness.

Moving into hardware, I just scored a Cooper FX Generation Loss pedal. This thing sounds so good/bad! I’m running all my hardware synths through it.

T-Rex Replicator. I also just got this. Nothing beats a real tape delay. I set it to the slowest motor speed, turn up a slight bit of the chorus effect which further wobbles the motor speed, and add saturation and feedback to taste. I used to love my Strymon pedals, but this sounds so much more authentic. Because it is.

A real tape deck. Again, nothing beats the real thing. I recommend getting a cassette 4-track with a variable pitch control. That way you can work the motor speed while you’re recording or playing back. I still use a lot of plugin options for the sake of convenience, but they all fall short if you truly want the lofi, worn out, and wobbly tape sound. These are easy to come by... I got mine for $40.
Incomplete list of my gear: 1/8" audio input jack.

i've been looking for a real tape deck. :[ have had considerable difficulty finding one locally.

I already have a hardware reel to reel (ReVox) but I've spent most of my time since the early 80s trying not to get it to sound like these plugins. I also have some little cassette players which is where I first came across the batteries running down FX. Again at the time that was something I was trying to avoid - and it's not exactly a controllable effect. I think the first time I heard it used as a creative effect was on Neu's second album which was in 1973 (they didn't have the money to complete the second side of the album so they took the first side and effectively remixed it, speeding it up, slowing it down etc.)

So it's kind of ironic I'm trying to get these sounds back.

You can do it with a couple of Melda MVibrato 's, set the lfo waveform to noise and slow the modulation right down, add in depth to taste, and again at a different speed and depth etc. - If you think about it the building blocks of a tape emulation plugin really is just Distortion - Compression/Dynamic EQ - Vibrato pitch - Noise etc, which can be build for free :)

Cheers.
KoBs.

+1 for Daw Cassette, and I'd also throw in Waves J37 in the mix. I think it's mostly for saturation, but you can dial in a bunch of Wow and Flutter that sounds pretty nice.

I've heard good things about XLN's RC-20... anyone have thoughts? It's on sale now.
