Demoed it. Not worth that kind of money IMO. Maybe I don't have the golden ears required to recognise the magic 1% that makes the difference.

I'm with you here. I'm still demoing it. Spent already about 12 hours playing around with it with different uses. My assessment so far is that it is, in fact, a compressor The only way I'm getting it is under $50 and possibly will end up selling it later on. But then, my ears are just plain ears I guess. I'm kind of laughing at the price without any discount... $329. Even at $50 I would seriously think about saving that and buying cytomic glue a little later. Anyway, just me I guess. Note: it's not bad at all, it sounds good and it does the job... the job that my other 39 compressor plugins do.

It's getting rave reviews on Gearslutz. I got a $75 voucher the other day I didn't think I'd use. Demoing it now. Hope I don't want it $$$

Some folks over at gs have been saying that the Iron doesn't color quite enough. Some have also raised concern how it handles hot signal unfavorably.

I don't see what the $329 hoo-haa is about SPL Iron.
I was almost convinced that an amazing mastering compressor would be mine for sure, considering i can get it for $74... but I demoed for a little while and really can't get into it. It might be extremely versatile, but for a mastering engineer maybe. For me, it's a waste of time. Presswerk wipes with it.

It's getting rave reviews on Gearslutz.

every new plugin gets at GS the "it's the best thing ever"
and "now I use it on all my mixes" treatment by a large number
of folks who apparently (a) have way too much money to spend
on new toys (b) are extremely bored with their lives (c) never
bother to test thoroughly and objectively the said new toys
(but can express absolute opinions with conviction), and
(d) can never seem to find 3-4 mastering compressors or eqs or
reverbs to stick with and focus on actually getting some work (or simply
music) done.

For compressors last month's craze was acustica's El Rey. This month is the spl iron.

The hilarious pattern includes after no more than a couple of months, that
every "best thing ever" that is "used in every mix" is revealed to:
destroy/smear/soften transients, add a few db here and there
(typically in the low end for compressors), have wrong timing, metering
or control markings, craps out when overdriven, have numerous bugs, etc. etc.

This endless cycle is kind of fun but also sad.

For someone like me who's been following 'computer music' for almost 30 years, it's very exciting!

FYI In checking out IRON and ChopShop with Plugin Doctor, IRON does emulate harmonic distortion but ChopShop does not. IRON appears to be a very gentle compressor regardless of how you drive it.

yeah i was hoping i could use it as a 'buss compressor', but it appears it really is a mastering compressor... it did sound good though, don't get me wrong, it's more that i'd have to sit there for 10-15 minutes to get the most out of it.
