Forgetting about the fee, DS shared info with PA that he had no right to share legally, end of story.

I guess we can all agree that Dmitry did great work in the past. But some people don't like the fee. It's great that you don't mind. I don't think it's good business practice. And giving away personal data without consent is objectively unacceptable (and depending on your location illegal). Lots of stuff that can be debated in public.![]()
If I'd be picky me would rant about PA, too, because they newslettered me again though I made them stop their stalking communication behaviour some time ago. Couldn't stand it any longer... and now they did it again (apparently because I bought a synth from another company, can you dig it?).

I could be wrong, but I took DS email as saying that this was a way to try to be able to continue making a living producing plugins.
However, I enjoy the assumption that plug-in developers are always making "sweet deals" and out driving Maseratis while laughing at their customers.

I just checked and indeed Thorn 1.2 now includes three preset packs. I used my monthly voucher, so the upgrade was free for me (I didn't have any plans to use that voucher anyway). So for me it's a great deal.whannel wrote: Fri Feb 08, 2019 12:59 pm Comes with the $45 presets bundle, I'll take ithttps://www.jrrshop.com/ds-audio-softwa ... ons-bundle
What I don't get is why didn't they communicate that the upgrade fee covers those preset packs. Not everybody cares for presets of course (and some people will already have them), but the point is that you get something in return for the upgrade price. Communicating that would probably have saved them some annoyed reactions.

That's about the only thing i understand in this discussion (even though i never quite got why people are so protective about their oh so important data...). Not the entitlement to get free updates. You buy a software product, not the promise of lifetime free updates.wagtunes wrote: Fri Feb 08, 2019 1:47 pm Forgetting about the fee, DS shared info with PA that he had no right to share legally, end of story.

Again, though, if you contacted Dmitry, or PA, i'm sure there'll be good will from their side, in any regard. Knowing him from email correspondence, this thing, and people complaining about him treating customers badly is beyond ridiculous.

As far as I'm concerned, I don't care about the fee, because I have a voucher. I don't like the idea to pay for nothing, but I won't pay at last, so everything is in order. I'm quite happy the Dmitry Sches found a new home and can concentrate only on development.
I don't care that they transfered my user data from DS to Plugin Alliance, because it's making things easier. Anyway, this is how I would have ended it, so nevermind.
But there is one thing, one little thing, that's not making me want to "upgrade" : "v1.2 offers some small but valuable improvements, the biggest one being : if you use the PA version, you'll be able to use the plugin on 3 computers at the same time". => I DON'T GIVE A S#|T !!!!!!
If you want us to pay for an upgrade nobody asked for, at least, make it valuable...

I know this is a controversial move but I just have to add that I have worked with Dmitry in the past and he has been one of the most kind and generous people I've ever ever had the pleasure of dealing with in this business. We know, you might think it's not fair. It's always a pain to pay for any minor update and there is really no much reasons to do that. Frankly DS Audio as well never thought of any additional charges it could ask for in future. However, we did everything to minimize the fee as much as possible and set it to $19 USD. The fee is needed to cover expenses for allocating storage and bandwidth at Plugin Alliance servers, beta testing and integration work. We hope that the benefits of Plugin Alliance platform could be worth enough for you to upgrade.
I'm sure there was no evil intent but as he said it's always been a one man operation and he has been a developer for quite a few other projects that he doesn't get credit for. I'm sure he is just spread too thin.
If this new arrangement allows him to focus on writing code instead of administration duties then we will all benefit in the long run.
I can think of other developers who would benefit from such an arrangement that would allow them to focus on what they do best and that's make great plugins and software. One small operation that comes to mind right now is swamped with support and sales requests and that is having a negative impact on their ability to release updated versions of their plugins.
I'm not trying to defend the $19 PA fee but since I consider Dmitry a friend as much as someone on the internet can be I feel obligated to defend him as the kind and generous person he has been to me in the past. Again I don't think there was any evil intent and this was a decision simply based on practicality. Perhaps the anger should be more directed at PA.......

Yeah, I don't really care about the fee (though it's kind of crappy just to get a minor update and transfer) and have no desire to get future updates (Thorn V 1.1 works perfectly fine, thank you) and I'm already even a PA customer, but legally, DS could get into a crap ton of trouble if people wanted to make a case out of it. I wonder if he's even aware of this? I mean we DO have laws today against this very sort of thing.chk071 wrote: Fri Feb 08, 2019 2:00 pmThat's about the only thing i understand in this discussion (even though i never quite got why people are so protective about their oh so important data...). We needed to be contacted FIRST by DS and ASKED if he could share our info and we would have to sign and agree to it. Otherwise, he'd have to cease and desist, of course informing us that we would not be eligible for any future upgrades. Once all this was done, THEN and ONLY then would all this be on the up and up.
Well, I never got an email asking for permission. Hell, I never even got an email about the change.
Bottom Line: This was handled VERY badly, not to mention VERY illegally.
Sadly, nobody in authority REALLY cares about enforcing these laws anyway.
