Is ther something besides dmg compassion which has good control over the release curve?

I seach something for pumping compression for drums with good control over these parameters to get the' suck in' sound right timing wise. That means when the release starts and the sounds comes back.

I find this phase so important for the groove feeling. I find it difficult to adjust with just the release from normal compressors, because when the curve is not right from the current compressor you have no chance to get it right. Strange that most compressors have no control over this parameter.

- DMG TrackComp in DMG mode has 3 log, 3 linear curves plus an S curve.

- Pro-C2's different "modes" are based on different slopes.

- The new Blue Cat compressor seems to have something along these lines although I haven't tried it yet.

- For the particular sound you're describing, try ReaComp as it inherently has an anti-log release slope that accentuates this kind of pumping. Elysia Mpressor also offers 2 flavors of release curves including anti-log.

Image Line Maximus has 8 different slopes for each Attack and Release + a complete customizeable compression curve for each curve and the Master

MeldaProductions MTurboCOmp offers a six-speed Release shape:
Release shape
Release shape controls the shape of the release stage. The shape affects the ratio between pumping and distortion, which simply cannot be avoided. Please note that the release time parameter is quite dependent on the mode, so you may expect differences in actual release time for different modes of the Release shape.

Slow modes usually producemore pumping, but less distortion, as the detected level follows the input level more slowly. Conversely Fast modes reduce pumping, but cause more distortion. The type of the distortion is different between modes. You may actually profit from the distortion caused by some modes as the generated higher harmonics may enhance the audio. The default Fast mode provides a good compromise between distortion and pumping.

There are also 2 custom modes available. With these modes you can actually draw the shape. Please note that what you draw is NOT what you get. The custom shape graph converts the difference between the input level and the current detected level (as represented by the X-axis) into the speed of level detection (as represented by the Y-axis).

... or if you have FabFilter Saturn or Volcano you can create your own compressor and make almost any shape of attack and release by modulating the envelope followers with other envelope followers. Quick to setup really program dependent stuff. It'll easily get quite brutal and pumpy though but that's what you are after, no?

A couple of features of DC8C may be of interest:

Feedback compression has a more exponential character than feedforward. DC8C has a knob to mix between feedback and feedforward-style compression.

The "s-curve" options for both attack and release stages.

Blue Cat looks great and has great control, but it distorts pretty quick with high compression, and fast attack for pumping.
EDIT: I noticed that the release settings are faster than on other comps. Maybe this is the reason why I thought it distorts quickly. I'm still thinking that it distorts a bit easier in extreme settings. Not sure if it's the dsp or just because you have no save limit for extreme settings.
EDIT2: Ok, I like better now. You have so much control that you have to be really carefully. When setting up with care I get good results.

I have not found the anti-log setting in ReaComp, are you sure it's in there?

seems only 32bit :/

It's there by default, and it's so distinct in sound that I don't use Reacomp except when I specifically want that kind of pumping feeling.

Like Melda's starting at the 1:00 mark

@Bouroki: Reacomp is really not that bad for this sound. You're right.

@SoundPorn: thanks, but the release curve seems not adjustable unfortunately.

I just try Image Line Maximus and so far it sounds really good. I don't get the UI completely at the moment, so I have a bit trouble to set it up. It's also quite expensive I have to say and pretty old (2007). Never heard of it before.

Plus the release has hold and continuously variable program dependency.

I find the DC8C a bit complicated. I like possibilities but with DC8C it's not easy to understand what each knob does exactly. I like the Blue cat compressor in this regard, very clear to control.

DC8C has something, but so far I find it a bit too slow from the release or the release curve shape isn't right. Not sure. Maybe I have to play around with it more.

You could try using Zip. It might have the controls you want?
