Which instrument can i give for counter melody when trumpet is playing the melody?
In general, how do I choose the counter melody instrument?

Any instrument capable of playing a melody will work. There are some vague 'rules' in orchestral works for which instrument should play a counter melody, but in general it's your choice.

Depends a bit on style, but if I had to nail my colours to a mast I'd suggest piano.
(Go for a hang drum if you're feeling adveturous though!)

Why not state that information in your OP or thread title then, rather than wasting the time of people just trying to be helpful and getting shotdown for their efforts??
Quite a few genres have trumpets playing melodies with other instruments providing counter melody

Me neither. Seemed like a strange tangent from the discussion up to that point

To me, since we're talking orchestral, I think the flute is a good counter-point to the trumpet.
