I've been getting involved more with these kind of plugins, as a replacement/alternative. What are the best free clippers for you people?

Post

Airwindows cliponly and AD7

Best is subjective, this looks good, Venn Audio Free Clip.

That is probably one of my most used plugins.

Free edition of LVC Clipshifter is the best free clipper!

Venn Free Clip. I love it. Use it over limiting when mastering. Can't heap enough praise on this lil guy.

This one, Buzz Cut and the Limiter No. 6 clipper seem to be the three best ones from the ones I've tried. Still, more options from you people are always welcome (and wanted), the more options I can try, the better.

Can you elaborate on this? Was always under impression clipping is bad. Finishing up some songs and have thought about throwing a clipper on master to get a db or 2 of loudness. At times it feels like even transparent limiter kill the vibe of some projects. I have used D16 Frontier on instruments to clip and doesnt sound bad, so now you have me wondering if I should throw it on the master too.

Clipper plugins are made so the distortion they produce sounds good, unlike clipping the track in your DAW or when recording.

The thing about "transparency" on clippers is that they touch less of the tail, mostly just the peaks. I'm saying this because limiters, like any kind of compressor, tend to sometimes (depending on the settings) to touch the tails and produce artifacts like pumping, while clippers only distort the peak in the moments those go above the thresold (no pumping at all) and they tend to sound more punchy than limiters.

Aahhh I see. Will try to clip before doing a brickwall. Thanks

Yeah a little touch of hard-clipping (only a bit on the peaks) can really help in a transparent way.

New Venn Free Clip is in beta, I'm waiting for the release :)

G-clip is pretty good for the low-cpu needs when needed as mastering plug-ins sometimes consumes too much resource. Used mildly and I usually don't engage the oversampling.

Not to hi-jack thread but just tried using clipping on master. Wow. Makes life a lot easier. Been struggling to get my songs louder by a 1 or 2dbs and not all mushy with limiting. Think the stars aligned when i came across this thread.

Using both d16 frontier (free) and Toneboosters Barricade limiter with the clipping option before brick-wall. Amazing. Just fell in love with TB Barricade4 a little more. D16 Frontier gets really nice grit to it too but lets a few peaks by. Nothing a free limiter like loudmax cant handle right after it if on master.
