Hey guys,
I've been trying to recreate some sounds that seem pretty similar to me, I'll give you 3 examples so that you can get an idea of what I'm talking about.

Here it's played periodically, at 0:03, 0:09...

Here you can hear it at 0:56, 0:58, 1:01...

Finally, here at 0:21, or 0:26 (with a lower pitch if it's the same sound).

So far I've come somewhat close at least to the second one by pitching down a tambourine and high-passing it. Do you think the approach is right? How would you guys go about this?

it's a wood block percussion with a ton of reverb and high-passed

You think so? What I'm getting with that seems a little too well-defined, so to speak.

Taiko drums. Played on the rim. Often played in ensembles as well.

Like already said, drowned in lush reverb.
Can be anything that ticks, with lots of reverb.

So look for reverb that suits this style!

Interesting, thank you all for you answers. The sounds from the 1st song mainly (and 3rd maybe) seem to have an almost pitched quality all the way through the reverb tail, I can't quite manage to get close with the Taiko rims the way I can with some already quite long metallic hit, maybe the few Taiko samples I have are inadequate though. Now this may or may not be straying off-topic but what kind of reverb would you use for this style?

You could have a look at reverbs that are "specialized" toward longer decay times (beyond Room or even Hall, think size Cathedral) while retaining enough clarity/detail.

For example (from the FREE domain)

Signaldust - Abstract Chamber

Or

TAL - TAL Reverb 4
https://www.kvraudio.com/product/tal-re ... audio-line

Or (with some tweaking of the many parameters and the right seeds)

ValdemarOrn - CloudSeed
https://github.com/ValdemarOrn/CloudSeed/releases

You sound like you are not scared off by tech talk.....so:

Here's some excellent info on Reverberation time/characteristics/rooms/halls

Ha that's funny, I was using Tal Reverb 4 for this. I'll take a look at all of that.

Use any one of those samples (I personally like the first one the best), pitch it down way down and add a big reverb.

I´d do it with Noise and HP/LP-VCF. Resonance is important.
