Do you know of any cheap/free ways to FM "filter"?

How to make that sound...

I'd like to be able to create FM type sounds using other sounds/instruments. I have read that "Omnisphere" has an FM (and AM) filter and the Sherman Filterbank also has one
Here's a clip to help you understand:

But those are both very expensive (more than $500). Do you know of any free/cheap ways to do this and how to go about it? If not free then with the tools I already have?
I have an MS-20 Mini synth and I know can make FM type sounds with it's own oscillators:

but I'm not sure you can apply FM to external sounds?

Zebrify has XMF filter--is this the kind of FM you are asking about, I don't know. Still, you'd have to own Zebra to get it (cheaper than the other options listed). Just brainstorming.

From the Zebra 2 manual: "The XMF (cross-modulation filter) module is an extremely flexible multimode filter featuring self-oscillation, input-dependent distortion and audio-rate FM via the extra input. The XMF is more CPU-intensive than any of the VCF models."
Doing nothing is only fun when you have something you are supposed to do.

The drop is $99 but completely worth it

What is $99?
Do you know if the MS-20 can add FM to external sound sources?

Cytomic "The Drop." (I'm not familiar with it)

I have read that the Drop creator also helped make Autofilter and Glue Compressor for Ableton. Any idea if The Drop offers more? (Ya, I'll have to demo it--but I can't right now, because I might spend more money--still wondering :) ).

The drop definitely offers more filter models and the models have extreme oversampling to reduce any aliasing.

I own a licence and use it all the time for crazy FM filter effects.

Another thing to watch out for is https://www.soundemote.com/fmd

Not sure if it does FM though

You might want to look at some of the software modulars out there. Try VCV Rack, and demos of Softube Modular, Phase Plant and Voltage Modular. Don't feel had about Omnisphere being expensive; it doesn't do audio rate modulation of its filters. Omni's FM and ring modulation only affect the oscillators.

If you want to do FM with samples, Synclavier V and Synthmaster might be worth checking out.

For FM (implemented as PM) with oscillators/waveshapes other then sines (e.g. samples/wavetables/additive) you can also check out:

Seaweed Audio - FathomSynth (the MONO is free)

Massive X and Diva both have filter FM, if you want to get plugin synths which have it.

Audio-rate filter modulation often introduces artifacts. Then, automation inside DAWs often has limited time resolution, so you can't get audio-rate modulation that way.

Luckily some synths have audio-rate modulation or dedicated filter FM, including Hybrid 3.

Actual filter cutoff modulation at audiorate is pretty rare. But solutions do exist (as mentioned above).

When moving the filter cutoff up and down at audiorate the filter, this will actually cause amplitude modulation at modulation frequency of all the partials in the modulated signal, at the amount that these partials are attenuated by the filter.....

This will cause sidebands on either side of each partial (+ and -) similar to the effects of frequency modulation and amplitude modulation.

You could even modulate an allpass filter at audiorates, creating complex phase modulation....
