I posted this in a different mega thread so I thought I'd try as my own thread...

I'm looking into putting together a desktop PC. Considering the 3600X, 3700X and 9600K. CPU benchmarks show that the 9600K and 3700X are pretty similar https://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/I ... 4031vs4043 but the 3700X is maybe 20% more expensive.

The 9600K performs better than the comparable 3600X at about the same cost. On the other had, scanproaudio shows the 9600K performing the worst. http://www.scanproaudio.info/2019/07/12 ... ic-number/

However, I notice that in the scanaudio tests the CPU are overclocked. So I'm wondering if the audio gains between these CPU would hold true if they were not overclocked.

I haven't bothered to overclock a CPU in many years. It used to be that we had to very carefully choose our memory, which often came with a premium price, if we wanted to overclock reliably. My second question then is, if we were to overclock these cpu from roughly 3.4GHz to 4.4GHz, how careful do we need to be with memory selection? Can we just get the ram recommended by the CPU manufacturer?

To complicate things even more, it looks to me that there could be a significant cost bump moving from a motherboard that tops out at 3200MHz ram vs 3600MHz ram + overclockability.

Thanks, I hadn't looked too hard for benchmarks. That one certainly is more in-line with what scanproaudio shows as well.

I wouldn't overclock for audio, but I'm far away from knowledgeable in this area, but hope Pictus will join soon and shed some light on that.

Keeping the CPU cores at fixed clock is usually better for audio workloads.
Some overclock is not a problem as long the CPU/vrm does not overheat
and the voltage limit is respected.

I'm tempted by the 3600. Its clock speed is a bit less than the 3600X but it's power consumption is 1/3 less. The 3700X looks a lot better performance wise, but it's getting dangerously close to double the price of the 3600. In Canada, $400 vs $240.
