I think on the market these are known as "audio interfaces". Most (if not all) already have a DAC onboard with specs pretty close to that audiophile box.

Like BertKoor said - there are audio interfaces that has both digital and analog outs - only use digital and you are fine.

RME stuff usually have ability to use one ADAT out as SPDIF, on the optical. But pricey so there might be better choices that do the job.

Yes, there are essential differences on DAC's.
I ran external DAC's for computer/CD/DVD/BD players since early 90's because of it.
Why pay for high quality DAC on every unit you buy - use one really good of choice for all of it.

I certainly understand the sentiment if you look at the raw numbers:

Code: Select all

            Focusrite Audient MyTek stereo
            Scarlett 2i2 id14 96 DAC
--------- ----------- -------- ----------
Price € 170 € 290 € 830

Dyn.Range 108 dB 117 dB 120 dB
(A-weighted)

THD+N < 0.002% < 0.003% 0.0005%
            -101 dB - 99 dB -107 dB

Freq.Response +/- 0.1 dB
But those are just numbers. Where's the line between good enough and overspec'ed?

Given that it's advised to listen to your monitors at around 85 dB SPL and you'd need about 20 dB headroom, a dynamical range of 105 dB is enough. Anything over that is overkill for real-world purposes. Harmonic distortion of the worst card will be sitting at 85 minus one hundred = -15 dB SPL. Can you really hear that and spot a significant difference in a blind A/B comparative test? My bet is on No.

Just my opinion, just like audiphiles are entitled to theirs

Just did a quick google on "USB SPDIF ASIO", because you probably want a USB interface with a good ASIO driver.
  • The Well-Tempered Computer has a (outdated?) list of USB interfaces featuring SPDIF. They list just one with an ASIO driver.
  • On the SoundOnSound forum someone had a simular need. Worth to read that discussion.
  • An interesting interface I found was the ESI U24 XL. It's small, rather cheap, with just enough functionality for your needs. Optical & coax SPDIF ins & outs, and a proper ASIO driver! I own a PCI card from that company, and they have (or at least had) their act together in this aspect. Also found some measurements of the AD/DA converters they use (no specs found in the manual) and these look like a lower league than the FocusRite & Audient cards. But who's complaining for that price and SPDIF is all you need.
