Looking for a simple audio editor in a VST, something that will play back in sync to the host.

Anything that will edit the track I drag n drop into it.

Image Line Edison works but it's not free.

What you look for basically requires ARA, so it's far from "simple"... and there's no ARA-compatible conventional editor at all yet as far as I am aware of it, let alone a free one.
However several hosts let you open clips in an external editor. Which is the one you are using?
