With that logic ... 12 string guitar is more versatile than a six string guitar. What a nonsense.
You can't really compare a synth and guitar like that. A guitar only comes with one "preset", the famous "A001 Guitar" preset, while a synth can create (synthesize) many different kinds of sounds. More oscillators, LFO's, envelopes, filter types, modulation destinations. audio routing options etc. clearly make a synthesizer more versatile when it comes to synthesizing sounds. There are lots of sounds you simply cannot create on a Juno with its single oscillator, envelope and LFO. It's closer to a guitar in that way because most Juno patches tend to sound distinctly like a Juno, due to the limitations and characteristic sound of the chorus.

I'm sure this synth will be fantastic like all Synapse products, but it's a crowded market. OP-X Pro II already sounds very close to the original, and there's also the free OBXD and a number of other virtual analog polysynths that don't emulate the OB-X in particular but sound very similar.
Take a single oscillator, producing a drone. Send it to the wave shaper, altering the tone.
This can be a triangle, Sawtooth or a square. Modulate the pulse width, nobody will care

The cool thing about the digital world,is that there are less constraints than there were back in the stone age...

So you can base an emulation on a particular model and then add new features that take it way beyond the original concept...

Why do we keep trying to recreate the past when we have so many more possibilities available to us now ?

For most of the people who owned the hardware back in the day,the digital world is like a breath of fresh air...

I'm sure that Synapse's offering will bring a few extras to the table and will be another nice tool in the toolbox :)

What's the expected price tag, about the same as The Legend? Do Synapse usually have introductory offers?

Like with The Legend you could indeed expect some advanced features that were not included in a real OB-Xa while i do not want to talk about details yet (and might also not be allowed to do so at the moment...).

The digital world may be a blessing for someone frustrated with limitations in the analog world, but the simpler, more focused synths, like the characterful analogs of yesteryear, are a breath of fresh air to those used to the endless possibilities of the digital world and paralysis of too many options. So that, plus the fact that people appreciate the subtleties of how analog circuits behave, would be the reason for recreating the past. But I agree that certain things should not not be recreated, like the inability to save presets, or a lack of velocity sensitivity. Like I've said elsewhere, there is a balance to be struck where the features keep you in a sweet spot, but you can have the expressiveness that you want, which doesn't detract from the sound or workflow.

Yes...I remember those days well...

Sourcing the CM chips and the other bits and pieces, saving and loading programs from cassette and getting in and tuning the oscillators from time to time...

I started on the small OB and ended up with two OB8's a couple of Linn 9000's and heaps of synths and outboard gear along with the analog consoles etc and it became a real PITA...

Things don't have to be complicated in the digital world unless you want them to be and the whole domain is way easier to deal with...

Museums are fine and the steam age is quaint, but it doesn't make sense to be locked into the past

Ultimately,it is the music that matters and if you're a working man,you need tools that are efficient and expedient...

An old one in this thread

Here is the direct link so people don't have to scroll through the thread http://www.synapse-audio.com/obxa-comparisons.zip

First half is the hardware, second half is a very early version of the software.

Based on those short clips it sounds good.

I also hope there is an OB-X skin. I can't stand the dark Xa with horizontal lines. Or on the newer OB-6 either. Everything is so much less clear. Tee light blue plain X is much easier to look at.

The UI is done very tastefully :)

Well I guess the Legend wasn't exactly accurate but was a nod in the direction. And the Legend is indeed a very tastefully done GUI. One of my favorites. So I have faith.

I saw the Starr sky Carr review on minimoog emulations and out of Diva, monark etc it was the most accurate sounding.

** edit**
:dog: Just realized you meant the GUI
