A win win for everyone.
I don't see why it's so offensive for those looking for an accurate emulation that there might be an extra panel to open (like Arturia does) or a back panel with some extra settings (like legend). There's no downside to extras as long as they don't clutter what makes it fun and simple. And obviously an emulation should sound like the original, that's the point. To have the quirks and character of the original. Again, extra filter types, velocity sensitivity etc., do not impact this accuracy unless you want it to (switching the filter for example).

And the idea that it only matters in a mix is just plain silly. Instruments are not just tools to and end, they inspire you to actually do something with them in the first place, which often does come from playing it alone. And there is no one "what it sounds like in a mix". A synth will sound how you want it to in a mix, depending on what other instruments are there that it needs to be separated from and what you want to emphasize about the synth.

What I'm rather wondering is if Synapse Audio already had a OB-Xa, or if they bought one just for this emulation, which would total to about 10.000 € these days, if I see that correctly... insane oldtimer prices.
i think they borrowed it, same as the minimoog, not 100% sure
Aye. :tu:

Agreed again, but as we see, some find extra features "sacrilegious", distracting and the original limitations inspiring, so instead of judging their nostalgic purism, why not simply monetize on it?
Just a thought.

Don't underestimate the work of adding and changing the whole structure of the synth. I would even assume that the basic DSP is the least work, and the most work is in putting all those modules together. After all, the DSP is a lot of copy and paste.

Anyway, I'm sure a lot of this will flow in future synths anyway (as has happened in Dune 3), so, you better wait for that, if the OB-Xa is too limited for you.

While doing my own patches with the new OB-Xa plugin which has some advanced features (not talking about any details here yet...) my mind is totally free concerning using all available features and not limit myself to something like "oh this was not included in the real thing so i am not allowed to use that...".

Those who want to limit themselves to the original feature set could do that and nobody is forced to use any of the advanced/additional features.

IMHO independent of how close it might be to a real OB-Xa (which i never used myself but several other real analogs...) this plugin feels like a true instrument and for sure it sounds and feels like a real analog synth.

I could easily gets sound from this that i would call "Oberheimish" and/or different from sounds i could get with other plugns like e.g. The Legend, Repro-5, Diva, Arturia Matrix-12 V2, Roland Cloud Jupiter-8 and Xils Lab Syn'X 2.

I remember walking into the local Guitar Center in the early 2000's and seeing an OB-8 for like $800. Thing was huge. Almost wish I bought it just because of the current resale value.

Is this an OB-8 emulation?

jk

Post

Maybe they could burn that thing down to emulate a burning OB-Xa.
We already have burning pianos :D

I think the success of The Legend suggests that is completely unnecessary.

All of which only requires that it sound good, not that it be a 100% accurate emulation of some old piece of krap nobody wanted 40 years ago. In fact, I'd suggest a less accurate emulation with added modern performance features would fit this bill even better than a slavish copy with no velocity or after touch response.
And there is no one "what it sounds like in a mix". A synth will sound how you want it to in a mix, depending on what other instruments are there that it needs to be separated from and what you want to emphasize about the synth.
Not about the "synth", about the "part". Synths are, for the most part, completely interchangeable. A good song will still be a good song no matter what instruments are used to play it - synths, piano, acoustic guitar or a full orchestra. If your music is reliant on specific synths, then it is probably a poor piece of music. Obviously you want to do the best job you can but the synth should never be more important than the part.

No release date yet but the beta team have had it for about a month now, maybe 6 weeks (time flies when you're having fun).

Bones, most of what you've been posting is fine, but no matter how you dance around it you called someone (anyone?) who disagreed with you "stupid". That's getting posts deleted, and the good parts of those posts get deleted along with the much smaller offending parts. That's a shame, but you knew the rules before you posted and I'm not inclined to do fine-grained mopping up.

Your posts that don't contain personal abuse are still there. They're good, informative stuff.

Don't want posts you worked on to be deleted? You're smart enough to know how to prevent it. And the "I'm a big boy, I don't mind if people fight back" line doesn't pass muster. Leave the insults out, however disguised/rationalized/whatever, and your posts are golden.

I'm deleting posts made in reaction to Bones' insults as well, because they're disrupting the thread too. That doesn't mean that mods are ignoring you or "sweeping this under the table".

For those who posted objecting to the insults, don't. Just report the specific post or posts and mods will deal with them. We can't read every post in every topic. If you're reading a thread and someone breaks the rules, LET US KNOW. Put a little effort in and we'll be more effective.
