Yes. Exactly. Also, organize your questions.

For instance, you could start a thread with a subject like "Please help me understand keys and chords". Your first post might say "This song [link] uses the chords ___, ___, and ___. I would think that its key was __, but KeyDetectingSoftware says it's in ___ instead. What's going on here?"

Once you understand the replies, you might post in the same thread "Okay, I get it. Now, how about this song: [link]. The chords in this are ___, ___, ___, and ___. Does this mean it's in ___? Or maybe ___?" Then work on that question.

Or you might wonder about software that could help you, and start a thread called "Software help for keys, modes" or whatever. First post: "Does anyone here use KeysToTheKingdom? I heard it's good for…" and so on. If you learn there's a similar program, instead of starting a new thread to ask about it, simply post to the same thread, "A friend told me about SuperKeyFob 2.1 and suggested it could help. Does anyone have experience with this software? How does it compare to KeysToTheKingdom?" and so forth.

Keeping things organized by not spamming threads all over the forum will show you care enough to be part of the community and to keep it clean. Sort of like picking up trash along your street and putting it in the waste bin.

The idea is to participate in a discussion — to use your word, to "contribute" rather than simply consume others' time and energy.

Did you read the manual?
Spring Goose wrote: Sat Mar 14, 2020 4:58 pm
Music theory doesn't have a manual.
thecontrolcentre wrote: Sat Mar 14, 2020 5:02 pm The Mixed In Key manual ... obviously.
What are you going on about?
You keep posting about the software Mixed In Key ... asking why it does this, that or the other. I asked if you had read the manual and you ask me what I'm going on about? That's both stupid and rude.

I'll figure it out without help then. Sorry for asking for help on a help forum.

No, keep asking. If you have theory questions people here will help.

(But note what Meffy said below)

Histrionics will get you nowhere. Asking for help without spamming the forum just might.

There's nothing wrong with asking for help. But when you do it in a way that provokes other forum users to report ever-multiplying threads, it's time to adjust your manner of posting. It's not rocket surgery.

I'd assumed that my questions ands the answers would be of use to other people than only me. I won't bother with this consideration in future.

Sorry you'll have to be more specific.

That's a nice quality of light, I must say.

I haven't ordered the book yet Vurt.

I already knew about modes. The root key (I) is "home", that's what i hadn't understood, but i've got it now.
That's why my songs were being a different key or mode than i intended!

My music/tracks/songs are much improved than a year ago. I've already read quite a lot about music theory and songwriting, it's just taking some time before it all comes together.

I can play the keyboard a bit.
I do understand about songwriting.
I enjoy music. I enjoy songs. It doesn't have to be a "song per se" for me to enjoy it, although i do enjoy songs.
Some examples to demonstrate my keyboard skills and that i have an idea what i'm doing:
(if anybody's interested) (you don't have to listen to the whole songs, you should get the idea)

The other thing is: these sort of keyboard songs aren't the only songs/tracks i like. Also i like minimal/dubby/techno/house, which i think should improve too after i've got this down.

@ Thecontrolcentre.

I understand: keep practicing the keyboard, i've got some way to go, i'm not there yet.

Sorry for being stroppy.

It’s good to keep practicing, but you don’t need to be a great keyboard player to play good music.

Some people never learn theory or how to read music, but it doesn’t hold them back. I find it useful, particularly being able to read music as it means I can sit and learn how to play something much easier than trying to figure it out from scratch.
