Hi !

I've successfully installed the eLicenser Manager software on my Lubuntu 19.10 (64-bit) using Wine 4.0.2.

The manager works fine. It's quite possible to activate to activate licenses on the machine.

However, there's an obstacle with the USB dongle.

Wine is unable to detect the USB drive. It can however detect ordinary USB drives.

I've checked if the (Linux) machine can see the USB drive. It can.

This section from the output of dmesg below shows that teh machine can see the eLicenser USB.

Code: Select all

[18929.818478] usb 7-2.4: new full-speed USB device number 17 using xhci_hcd
[18929.957809] usb 7-2.4: New USB device found, idVendor=0819, idProduct=0101, bcdDevice= 1.01
[18929.957814] usb 7-2.4: New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=0
[18929.957816] usb 7-2.4: Product: eLicenser
[18929.957818] usb 7-2.4: Manufacturer: Syncrosoft
And this section from the output of lsusb also shows that the machine can see the USB.

Code: Select all

Bus 007 Device 017: ID 0819:0101 eLicenser License Management and Copy Protection

Now, the solution would be to create a symbolic link to to a comport under ~/.wine/dosdevices.

Code: Select all

ln -s /dev/ttyUSB# ~/.wine/dosdevices/com1
But for that to work one need to know which entry in /dev is related to the USB drive in question.

As you can see above there's no information in neither dmesg nor ls about the the relevant entry.

Just in case, I tried with

Code: Select all

dmesg | grep -i tty
and...

Code: Select all

dmesg | grep -i sdc
The issue isn't so much related to wine. And so, if one could find a way to determine the device it would be very possible to use the eLicenser key under wine.

Making it possible to run Steinberg products in Linux under wine. And, most lieky. also iLOK protected software that requires the USB key.

So....

Any ideas / suggestion on how to find the entry in /dev.

Alternatively - any ideas on how to create an entry for the linked to the device.

Thanks in advance ! :tu:

Until such time as eLicenser or hardware-ilok officially support
linux, any success using such things outside of officially supported
environments Mac/Win) could be seen as a serious failure of the products
security :hihi:

There has been some success using the software ilok-manager
in wine, and I would suggest researching that in the latest
wine-staging from wineHQ, hosted in the latest
Ubuntu Studio release. I had AIR Hybrid3 and Vacuum Pro
working for a while, but installing Boom ended that, and
I haven't had time to retry, which was a long long time ago,
in 'wine years'.

Choosing some windows products from Native Instruments
and IK Multimedia, along with linux native products from
U-he, discoDSP, and Modartt will provide
tons of commercial products.
I have Kontakt 6 and Reaktor 6 doing well enough,
along with IK Amplitube4, Syntronik, T-Racks, and SampleTank 3.
(SampleTank 4 CS use is limited for me, at least, to using
a single sound per instance, until I sort some gui issues)

Success also can vary between using Bitwig/Reaper/Mixbus and
other daws, as well as the DE in the session,
the core linux infrastructure beneath it all, and of course
the sum of your available system computer and audio hardware.
There is so much capability within that which 'just works',
that our few creative hours can be invested in that arena,
with experts in various other arenas always expanding our possibilties

I think there is a deal on now where if you buy
Bitwig, you get a free full U-he Repro synth
(both R1 and R5 are in the single U-he product)
Repro is a beast! Or choose the Presswerk compressor.
:o :hyper: :o

https://www.bitwig.com/en/20/bws-birthday.html

(the whattabout-this details should be in a few links at the above link.

Also, existing U-he and Bitwig customers can check
their existing user accounts for 25% discount offers.
Cheers

Well, this issue isn't really ralated to wine.

Wine do what it does well. I can run all my Arturia instruments as well as waves plug.ins using wine. Not problem. LinVST also comes into play well.

Of coruse native stuff is always better. But one should keep in mind that wine is not an windows emulator but a framework capable of natively run windows applications.

The issue is not a wine or an eLicenser / iLok issue. But more a question of "hacking" Linux.
