I just searched "Pirate music tutorial" in Youtube. That Inside Xbox one is really good, Robin Beanland has been around forever - he composed the music for the Killer Instinct games, Conker's Bad Fur Day, Donkey Kong Country among others.

You should probably look at the form of traditional English folk music. That's where most nautical music from England originated.
