So, you do want phasing issues?

Well, if that's want you want the world's your oyster.

There's Brainworx bx_stereomaker - it slices frequency spectrum in narrow "ribbons" and alternates them between L&R so it sums perfectly in mono.
Also there's lots of Leslie inspired plugins with Eventide Rotary Mod and Klevgrand Spinn being most recent one's.
Sometimes I just use mono to stereo reverb for this sort of task and maybe hype up the SIDE part of the tail - it nulls in mono but at least it doesn't smear it.

simple, place monitors further apart.

a free iZotope Ozone Imager

First of all: +1 for Imager

True, many "stereo wideners" mess with phase. This often means that summing/mixing back to mono will mess cause phase cancellations. So, you would be looking for one that is "mono-compatible"

Some only widen an existing stereo image (sort of stereo expander). Some can make stereo from mono.

There are many options, commercial and free. Some free examples:

A good and really simple to use free mono-compatible widener:

Infected Mushroom/Polyverse - Wider

On Delays. Delays create Phase differences (very few exceptions). L/R phase differences can be perceived as "width". See Haas effect. But Delays also cause Comb filter effects (when mixed back to mono).

Check some of the free Voxengo tools for Delay/Stereowidening or both. Each with it's own approach.

Sound Delay

Stereo Touch (Delay based)

Tempo Delay

OldSkoolVerb (Reverb=Delays. The user options give you access to the delay details)

Stereo Phaser and Chorus can also create/widen stereo, but often not Mono-compatible.

Melda Productions has some versatile free stuff too.

But also +1 for free Izotope Ozone Imager 2.

Mid/side processing in EQ or compressor can achieve some widening, presumably with less risk of phasing from a “widener”.

"PSEUDO STEREO WITHOUT PHASE ISSUES
Wider takes the massively popular stereo section from its sibling, Manipulator, and creates the illusion of an expanded stereo image of a mono signal to an awe-inspiring amount of width. However, Wider is a unique stereo plugin in the sense that it is completely “mono-compatible”, meaning that any signal that has been extended will always remain in phase with itself, even if summed to mono."

This is a tricky one for me because over the years I've come to realise that nothing sounds as good, natural and wider than just some really good selection and placement. For example, instead of taking a mono hi-hat sample and "stereoizing" it, most of the time it's better to just pan it to one side and then use other things (on the other panned side) to get more natural width.

Often the very best "stereoizer" is simply a fantastic reverb on a mono source.
