I absolutely love this filter sweep patch (preset 22 Classic Sweeper). Does it sound like the filter sweep is applied to only high notes? The tone of the filter sweep is super hi-fi (say, compared to the Tom Sawyer filter sweep sound). What kind of filter is needed to recreate it? LPF, HPF or BPF? I've tried to get close to the JD-800 sweep sound using Roland's Super Natural Synth engine and XV-5080 engine, but I just cannot get that clean, hi-fi filter sweep tone. Perhaps, can only the JD-800/990 filters do that?

That sounds like a stacked layer not a single layer preset? There sounds like a high or bandpass on one layer/osc and a low pass sweep with a fair bit of resonance on the other one. Been a while since I used one of those old Roland synths but that would be the way to go IMO.

Don't even try , the filter in the jd800/jd990 is unique and is one of the best digital filters ever implemented in a rompler .
The xv5080/integra pcm filters sounds harsh and digital , the supernatural filters are better but have a totally different flavour as the og jd800/jd990 .
What are you using to replicate it ?
You said you are using the xv5080 engine with sns filters , afaik that is not possible ( unless you're using the new jupiter xm but those are not called sns filters but VA filters )

Not really... rather sounds pretty oldschool. :D I like it though. Actually, oldschool is great.

I was gonna dust of my old JD990 to check how the preset was built up.

The JD990 is effectively a JD800 with (major) additional features. Definitely not "just" the JD800 Rack version. Also, the filters and DAC's are different from the subsequent JV1080/JV2080.

But...although it can load JD800 presets...

The JD990 has no Factory preset called Classic Sweeper (just checked SynthMania for the JD800/JD990 Presets).

A sort-of-similar filter sweep is represented in the JD990 Factory preset Sweepee

What I meant was that I tried both the SN-S engine and the XV engine in my FA-07 (of course, they are separate engines). SN-S filters sound smoother than XV filters, but the filter control in the SN-S is rudimentary.

The 990 patch "Sweepee" sounds even more intense! Fantastic patch (maybe programmed by Eric Persing?)

Anyways, I can easily create intense downward resonant filter sweeps using either synth engines, but the tone of my filter sweeps is not even close to *that* sonic character in the Synthmania video. As I suspected, the JD-800/990 filters have unique characteristics.

Some say that the Roland JD990 has/had the best digital filters ever. And that soundwise it is generally hard to beat, especially when paired with the SR-JV80-04 Vintage Synth Expansion (offering extra waveforms).

And sure, it helps that atthe time Roland had Eric Persing (who later founded Spectrasonics) creating many of their presets (but also contributed to the general design and samples/wavetables). Among many others for the JD800/JD990.

I sort of forgot what the JD990 can actually do in the hands of experts like Eric Persing or...Don Solaris

Can you point out the chords he's playing?

If you can get me those I'll give it a shot tomorrow.

I had a JV-90 and later an XP-80 with the SR-JV80-04 Vintage Synth card. I loved every minute of using the card. It is unbelievable that Roland achieved so much with the SR card with so little ROM.

I really like the character of the filter. Could it be that they used a very similar filter in the JP-8000?

I didn't know the JP-8000 and the JD-800 shared similar filters. Anyways, I hope Roland introduces a JD model for the Jupiter-X(m) and/or Roland Cloud.

Drifting ever further away from the original question about the Filter Sweep....moving towards the various Roland synths and their characteristics...

Don Solaris has been comparing the various Roland synths/series

I don't know, that's why I asked.

They assumed the compromise to release a JD-800/JD-990 emulation for Roland Cloud, but no release time was given. It may be in a year, in two years... who knows?

That and the V-Synth are the two main requests I have seen, and the ones I personally would love to see first.
