I like Novakill stuff, it reminds me on my teens when I was a fan of Wumpscut, FLA and such.
Quite straightforward but well made. When I read Bones' forum rants, Zombie Killers start palying in my head

Then that must be the Legend. Damn, now I know why I love that synth so much. I don't need to look at any spectrum. I know what my ears like. That's all that matters to me.BONES wrote: Thu Jun 11, 2020 12:20 pmThat's the start of the second round, with the resonance turned up on everything. I figured you'd all be able to keep track of six synths, played in the same order, twice. My bad.chk071 wrote: Thu Jun 11, 2020 10:23 amBit hard to decipher what is what but... I think the synths audible at around 0:23 has the most "bite" to the resonant behavior. The one at 32 seconds is a steaming pile of shit. Seriously, have a look at the spectrum, it's awful. Truly great oscillators, ruined.wagtunes wrote: Thu Jun 11, 2020 10:33 amMy 3 favorites were at 23, 26 and 32 seconds, whatever they are.

The first track has some serious low end and i am happy to have a good pair of hedphones that have no problem with this.

While I agree that you can get very similar results when you use the same filter type in both, it's not as simple as that. We didn't just take Repro-1, turn polyphony up to 8, added a new user interface and were done, there's more to it.mholloway wrote: Thu Jun 11, 2020 2:11 am Just FYI, as verified by Urs of U-He, Repro-5 is literally a polyphonic version of the Repro-1 code. The default filter modules have some differences between the two, but via the Tweaks page you can swap them out (and thereby use the Repro-1 filter in Repro-5, and vice versa). So liking the 'sound' of one better than the other really makes zero sense, as they are quite literally the same thing.
Hence my question, can you find that post from Urs that you're referring to here? I doubt that that's what he said (but maybe I'm wrong).

Here's the audio http://www.novakill.com/stuff/EMULATORIES.ogg
Ok, had a quick listen, cant tell you what is what right now, but i can tell you #4 sounds the worst of the bunch, the rest have their own appeal, a couple sound really good (tho they all sound very different, so its hard to say as the sound itself isnt matched very well)

HEADon is chiefly PlastiCZ! and my SynthEdit synths, ZOMBIEkillerz is mostly the latter, with a bit of the original Toxic FM synth that Rich licensed from Maxx Claster for Orion. All of them consigned to the dustbin now that we have moved to 64 bit so these songs have had to be totally rebuilt with different synths to play live.
Anyway, if you think this is OK, wait until you hear the new stuff. It is far and away the biggest step up we've managed. The songs are better, the production is a quantum leap up from these and even my vocals sound better for some reason (but the lyrics are still terrible).
Pretty good considering I mixed and mastered it with a pair of AudioEngine 2s and headphones that cost less than $100, eh? (I did confirm the mixes on my big Wharfedale Diamond Pros but I didn't have to change anything.)Ingonator wrote: Thu Jun 11, 2020 2:45 pmThe first track has some serious low end and i am happy to have a good pair of hedphones that have no problem with this.

OK, the synths. The one everyone seems to like is Korg's ARP Odyssey with the Rev I filter. It's first in both batches and the rev I filter is my favourite of the three on offer (which goes to show that synth manufacturers weren't trying to make their synths better in the 1970s as much as they were trying to keep costs down). Anyway, they are:
Odyssey
OBSession
Legend
RePro-1
V-Station
Korg Mono/Poly
Mono/Poly should have been easy to pick with all the phasing going on between oscillators. Legend should have been easy, too, because it simply isn't capable of making the kind of sound I was aiming for without seriously mucking about with the settings. I honestly cannot fathom how anyone can think that filter is any good. I hate it.
For the record, I think Odyssey and OBSession sound the best - both full and rich, as they should be with those settings. Mono/Poly also does a creditable job, especially when you consider how old that code is now, and RePro-1 is also quite nice. V-Station works OK but what I like about that synth is that I can patch it in my sleep and it is unbelievably good at the hard sounds we like to use. It's barely breaking a sweat here.
