Upcoming Synapse OB-Xa: Obsession

Well, given that the first one I really liked was at 23 seconds, which apparently was The Legend, that means I wasn't impressed by Obsession at all.BONES wrote: Thu Jun 11, 2020 9:35 pm OK, the synths. The one everyone seems to like is Korg's ARP Odyssey with the Rev I filter. It's first in both batches and the rev I filter is my favourite of the three on offer (which goes to show that synth manufacturers weren't trying to make their synths better in the 1970s as much as they were trying to keep costs down). Anyway, they are:
Odyssey
OBSession
Legend
RePro-1
V-Station
Korg Mono/Poly
Mono/Poly should have been easy to pick with all the phasing going on between oscillators. Legend should have been easy, too, because it simply isn't capable of making the kind of sound I was aiming for without seriously mucking about with the settings. I honestly cannot fathom how anyone can think that filter is any good. I hate it.
For the record, I think Odyssey and OBSession sound the best - both full and rich, as they should be with those settings. Mono/Poly also does a creditable job, especially when you consider how old that code is now, and RePro-1 is also quite nice. V-Station works OK but what I like about that synth is that I can patch it in my sleep and it is unbelievably good at the hard sounds we like to use. It's barely breaking a sweat here.
Appears the 3 synths I really liked were
Legend (I own) 23 seconds
Repro-1 (I own) 26 seconds
V-Station (I don't own) 32 seconds
So it looks like I won't be spending any money on Obsession.

Don't judge it by this example. Just wait until you try the demo and then decide. One of my favorites synths are RePro and Legend, and judging by this example, I shouldn't like them at all..but I really do in practice. I don't care about the others.

Except I thought The Legend and Repro-1 sounded great. I still don't understand what Bones hates about The Legend. Obsession did absolutely nothing for me. I mean nothing. 23 seconds in was the first time my ears really perked. And I do use The Legend all the time and I love it. This audio example only confirmed my love for the synth.Yorrrrrr wrote: Thu Jun 11, 2020 10:12 pm Don't judge it by this example. Just wait until you try the demo. Maybe I just love things that sound crappy.

Hahaha, it seems like I do too. RePro, Legend and Obsession must be really crappy, because I didn't like any of those sounds. Maybe the SCI Prophet 5, Pro One, Moog Model D and Oberheim OB-Xa were crappy synths after all

What happened to The real test is no more than hearing the sound and thinking "that sounds like Jump"
And now you have to look at the sound?

To be fair, synths were a PITA back then. Repairs, going out of tune, noise. I honestly would never go back to those days.Yorrrrrr wrote: Thu Jun 11, 2020 10:19 pm Hahaha, it seems like I do too. And use the multimode filer in Arturia's OB-Xa to make your ears bleed from resonance.

Again. Reading comprehension is a thing.Teksonik wrote: Wed Jun 10, 2020 9:07 pmWriting coherently is a thing too. You wrote:

It doesn't sound analog. In a blind test between Diva and analog hardware, people chose Diva as the analog hardware.![]()
But since you either won't or can't define what you mean by "sound analog" any further discussion is pointless.
Have a wonderful "analog" day.....![]()

Because it sounds wrong an octave higher. I flipped it up and down a dozen times before I decided that lower was a fairer/closer comparison.
No, at 23 seconds you are hearing the second run for Odyssey, followed by OBSession and then Legend. Those were the three you picked (checked and double-checked).wagtunes wrote: Thu Jun 11, 2020 10:06 pmWell, given that the first one I really liked was at 23 seconds, which apparently was The Legend, that means I wasn't impressed by Obsession at all.
Yes, because that's the start of the second run through, with the resonance turned up higher.
You don't have to do anything, it's just interesting to see and it should confirm/validate what your ears are telling you.TheMaestro wrote: Thu Jun 11, 2020 10:31 pmWhat happened to The real test is no more than hearing the sound and thinking "that sounds like Jump"

Odyssey
Obsession
Legend
Odyssey surprises me. I owned one. I hated it. I sold it.
Of course it was the ARP Odyssey so who knows.
Go figure.

Again writing coherently is a thing. You should probably just quit before you embarrass yourself any further.

@ Reefius - there was no point to begin with. I only did it to pass the time while I was waiting for a new, promised beta to drop, so that you guys would have something to do while you wait. I found it interesting and, in a couple of ways, surprising. And then I noticed how it all looked in Spectral view in OcenAudio and thought that was interesting, too. It's also the first time I've tried exporting OGG or FLAC, so I learned a few things on that front as well. So there was no point in me doing it but it was far from a pointless exercise overall.
