What do you like about this? It sounds pretty generic to me, I reckon I have a dozen VSTis that could manage it easily enough.
Well .... listening to your music .. I think our ears (and eyes) are tuned differently.
You have absolutely no feel or ear for the subtle finer details in sound (and visuals).
It's no surprise to me that everything sounds the same to you :phones:

he didnt say everything sounds the same, he said it sounded pretty generic, which it does. It a pretty simple pad with filter noodling. (very nice sound BTW)

he also asked you what you liked about it....

did you play/record that yourself? sounds vaguely familiar...

If a dozen of vsti on his computer could manage that sound easily then he basically says those sound the same as the Oberheim which is not true.

It's purposely generic to showcase the raw sonic quality of the synth without processing.
We already agreed that it's a simple synth where all that matters is the sonic quality.
That's why I mentioned that it would be great if anyone of the beta team could replicate or showcase the same sound coming out of Obsession without any processing.
Just playing a bit over the octaves and messing with the filter like I did.

It sounds familiar to you because it's THAT classic Oberheim sound.

I did something similar a while back, from a vid someone put up (sounded close to me but not exact, see below) ... its just too vague, you really need the demo to try for yourself

otherwise, it will be "not the same sound, not the same noodling"

never played an OB in my life, or heard one in person, i was thinking more the context of a song....

I meant as you might have heard it before on records.
It's the same preset as Prince used in this song :

Very simple and generic, but whenever he played it live post 1987 with another synth/sound it didn't have the same appeal anymore,

I'm going to play with the demo for sure !

@Ingo

Patches sound great man.

Whats the word on you putting up all the patches that don't make it into the factory library.

Will you be able to compile all of them from all the sound designers for us to download.

That would be sweet!

Many thanks for your kind words about the demos/patches. :)

I could not speak for the other sound designers and this is also up to Richard and not me but when a bank with sorted out patches from all sound designers does not happen (the topic is currently discussed) i would still like to publish a collection of my own sorted out patches. When they are part of a bank with other sound designers it is OK too for me. So it depends on the others and lats but least also on Richard if this happens or not.

How about answering the f**king question instead of throwing personal insults around? I actually earn a living noticing the finer details in visuals and we have no trouble finding an audience and critical appreciation for the music we make, either.

What you need to understand is that your audience, assuming one exists, aren't going to listen to your music the way you do. In fact, being at work, I listened to your demo on a pair of $30 headphones and the thing is, that if what makes it so good isn't apparent on $30 headphones, then it is most likely completely irrelevant to the finished product anyway. I can guarantee you that Jump didn't sell one extra copy because Van Halen used an OB-Xa. They could have used any synth they felt like using and it would still have done the job for them.

My point is there is nothing about that sound that says "Oberheim". You aren't pushing the oscillators or the filter enough for it to sound like anything in particular. Hence it sounds generic. If you don't see that it is through willful blindness to simple fact.
It's purposely generic to showcase the raw sonic quality of the synth without processing.
Then it fails.
We already agreed that it's a simple synth where all that matters is the sonic quality.
No, "we" didn't. It is a deceptively complex synth, given the number of controls it offers. It's the synth's versatility that is surprising and it's what makes it a good synth in my book. The Hard Sync, in particular, has a really nice edge to it without being too over-the-top, making it effortless to get exactly right.

it's nothing to do with Richard

if any beta team member wishes to make their own patches available, they can.

if they are compiled into one big bank, that will be a user project, not an official bank.

What about the browser? Is it the same like in Dune/Legend or is it different (like with rating and categories/info)?

I just deleted my responses to you and just let you be.
There's no reason or benefit for me to tune into your frequency range.

I truly hope OBsession is gonna be great and a success ... especially for Synapse.

Pathetic. Rather than engage in a reasonable discussion, you just want to throw all your pieces off the board. That tells me you have nothing and that you can't even admit that you "just like that sound". i.e. It's not good enough for you that you like it, you have to believe that it is actually, measurably better. Do you not see how stupid that is?

Don't feel bad, though, you are hardly on your own in that mindset. Donald Trump is like that, too.

Looks like you dont have a fine ear...
Man, the more i read here the less i feel like buying Obsession.
Speculations and accusations that are pretty low level.

If the thing sounds close to the real thing:

its bought.

Everyone stop with the negativity, its annoying.
Its just a Synth, and one that will please some people
like the Legend did.
