Turning vocals or guitar audio into synth type sound

So it would be great to just put ideas down with a voice and a mic, and turn that into a synth track or a wild effect or even an orchestra ( a weird one probably haha)
I've tried bouncing audio to MIDI but as far as I can see the results are pretty hard to control.
I've tried a good few FX chains but in the words of a song, I still haven't found what I'm looking for
Basically I'd like to use my guitar/voice audio as the start point, but turn it into something different...like synth sounds or ...something...it's hard to explain, I like experimenting with synths and drastic FX.
Just wondered what your thoughts were folks.

If you have a synth with an audio input like the MS20 you could mangle the sound that way. Goldfrapp did that a lot on their first album Felt Mountain.
Or you could side chain the audio - vocal or whatever - into a soft synth that has a side chain Input.

A good trick is to use a convolution reverb with the impulse response reversed so you're getting a fading in signal. Of course you don't have to use reverbs for your IRs- using another instrument sample can give some interesting results.
Filters already mentioned - a good self oscillating filer (I like the Plug & Mix 'Moogy Filter') will create additional overtones/harmonies which you can manipulate. If you also pitch shift the audio you can get all types of whacky effects
Vocoders - again try all kinds of carrier signals.
Autoswell plug-ins (eg - http://pechenegfx.org/plugins/automatic ... u-formats/) can give interesting results, if a bit hit and miss if you're a sloppy player..
Physical techniques - ebow/TC Aeon are great as is using a volume pedal for swell sounds.

Thanks donkey tugger, lot of good ideas there. I just looked for free filters and came across this which is another good use of a filterdonkey tugger wrote: ↑Sun Jul 05, 2020 4:24 pm Filters already mentioned - a good self oscillating filer (I like the Plug & Mix 'Moogy Filter') will create additional overtones/harmonies which you can manipulate. Probably not what you are looking for but this technique has many different applications:

Try it on electric piano for example:

I'm working on and improving my guitar to synth plug-in today,
but I have a recent release here->
https://www.sendspace.com/pro/dl/1jskh6
& here is the development thread->
viewtopic.php?f=298&t=439603
it takes regular guitar, just adjust gain to taste
the midi is very zippery
it's polyphonic enough
-like I say I am trimming and adjusting it and within 5 days I will release again, it's better again already. I'm happy to answer any questions, whether functional or technical
the approximate total knowledge of man/woman in regards to synth guitar is here->

Spectral morphing with Zynaptiq Morph or Melda MMorph or using Audio Input for FM in a modular environment such as Bitwig or with a plugin such as FM Slimer.

No idea what I'm looking for haha but I'll know when I get there
-actually that sounds pretty amazing, he's getting some great sounds.
Wonder if that could be emulated with existing soft FX ( probably won't be quite the same but it's interesting to try)

Thank you FrettedSynth, so StringSculptor2, Trampler, TrippLead - you load them as effects on an audio source ? Personally I use Reason (don't ask) which doesn't like 32 bit VST or bridge software so I'll have to remember how to do stuff in Reaper again hahaFrettedSynth wrote: ↑Mon Jul 06, 2020 3:13 pm https://rekkerd.org/fretted-synth/ Old and 32bit only but you could try some of the synths for vocals\guitar
