I was offered this with an NI Strummed Acoustic plugin and I had a look on YT etc for a few videos on it. My limited view from youtube was that it sounded very synthetic - is this a fair assessment of GS-2?
I am looking for closer to 'true' sounding so Ample Sound or NI would be my first choices but not having much luck seeing those for sale on the second-hand market at the moment...

It is synthetic sounding, I suggest Strum for when you want a more synthy guitar sound.
If you're looking for a sampled acoustic guitar library, I have Orange Tree Evolution Steel Strings for sale for $70. If you like it after some research then you can PM me! (EDIT: And so it came to pass...)

Yes, synthetic. That's actually what I love about it. It has its own special character.
And while I've owned, and for the most part, dumped the other ones mentioned - I now mostly use Musiclab for my more "authentic" sounds. I just clicked with its playability far more than I did those others.

Strum GS can be used as Guitar instrument without using the strum function.
I like its different sounds and use it preferably that way.
