I'm currently torn, between a very large 4K monitor, and a fairly large ultrawide (@ 3400 x 1440).

Any experience with either or both, or just a perspective that might help anyway?

Thanks.

Make sure the monitor you choose does not has a TN panel :!:
TN = garbage
IPS/VA/PVA = good

Make sure does it does NOT use PWM for the backlight dimming :!:

simple question: does the software you use most of the time benefit from an ultrawide screen?
personally, i do a lot of programming, so i need screen height, not screen width, because i want to see as many lines in the editor as possible.

Well... it really depends on your budget, and what you want to do with your monitor. I really can't see how a TN panel would be "garbage" for DAW usage, for example. Or even for gaming. It's true that for the last bit of colour perfection, you're better off with a IPS or VA panel, but, really, for your every day tasks which don't include semi professional picture or video editing, a TN panel will do.

IPS and VA have their flaws as well. For IPS, that's backlight bleeding, and non consistent lighting in the edges of the monitor. For VA, it's slower response times in games, for example.

Actually, if you want a good allround monitor for work, games and maybe even picture editing, I'd go for a VA panel. If you're on a budget, I don't think you will be disappointed with a good TN panel.

Primarily audio production. Guess I assumed this would be taken for granted.

I also do some other things on it, including writing, casual gaming, etc.

Wow, do they even sell TN screens any more?

Anyway, best case I can go to stores and at least briefly try some out. Otherwise... hm, still undecided. But could be 4K is a better all rounder.

I'm using a 27" 2K monitor and can't imagine going for a higher resolution without also increasing the physical size of the monitor. At this size, 4K is overkill.

Ultrawides do seem interesting for audio work though I have yet to use one.

On revision, will go for ultrawide. Most of my workflow tends towards needing more horizontal "real estate", so yeah. We'll see, I guess, but it seems to make more sense.

Currently using a 32" FHD monitor, btw.

In the space of that video I've gone from "My 34" UW is plenty. I'll never need more than that." to "God I really want that 49" monitor"
