There are also many from the user libraries for free.
What are some synths that sound amazing but the factory presets could be better?

I love creating sounds in mSoundfactory, especially weird and evolving ones. It may be the most versatile synth/sampler product around. But I don't think its preset library, which from what I gather is still mostly borrowed from sister synth mPowersynth, really shows off what this product can do. It's a product still in development, but it really needs a better show-me-what-it-can-do library.

I thought of one the other day - Tyrell N6. I installed it, went through the patches and thought it was pretty average. Some time later, I heard something here that sounded amazing, done in N6, so I gave it another go. Working from scratch on my own patches gave me a completely different experience and these days I rate it pretty highly.

Serum presets are pretty bad. I purchased some new ones early on when I got it but the joy of serum is that it’s so easy to make sounds yourself due to the way it’s laid out and with the drag and drop etc.
I have tried (and own) a few others but Serum often wins because I have found it to be the easiest and most logical to use.

Largo...
Largo...
Laaaaaargooo... shameful!
I like the dune presets that some have mentioned, they just need more people to patch for them (synapse). The TUC presets on u-he synths are some of my favorites and the first ones to look for and try when I check a new u-he synth.
Serum is ok-ish. Small library that needed updating a very long time ago. Some of the plucks are great.
Not sure how much I like the presets on bx_ober. I have to check knifonium this week as I am on the yearly sub train, but the stock presets on youtube videos were a bit meh.

1. Massive X - although they added a good number of presets with each update, I don't find the presets as diverse as the original Massive (not counting the number of presets here). But the new Massive X preset banks, Rush and Scene in particular, are superb - some stunning presets in them.
2. Pigments - underwhelming for such an awesome synth. But it does have a few presets which are beautiful.

When I think about it, I would even go more far. It's not just that presets are lame on a single synth. It's rather, that there are companies, where I regularly aren't impressed on the presets.

I can't think of a single synth where the presets were crap, and I mean ALL presets were crap.
I've gone through most banks on the synths I own, and I always find some that are awesome, and a lot that are of no use to me, doesn't mean they are rubbish.
I write a very specific style of music (Terror) and tbh there are so few banks for it, you have to know a bit of sound design to exist. So factory presets in synths are going to be 95% useless to me. But I always check them out.
Rob Papens presets are the best for me. He really puts a lot into the banks

Ah for Terror it's easy: just take the first preset sound you find, throw it through a limiter and crank it up to +30dB, then EQ some resonances in with highest Q for +20dB, then send it through a delay with feedback knob on highest value, after that send it through a distortion effect with square function curve, and maybe send it again through a limiter with +30 dB. Don't forget to raise Master volume slider, that the red area constantly is shining.
Voila, there you have the perfect Terror sound. Was a pleasure to support you.
