Are you sure about this? I doubt software on the master can compete with hardware (API 2500, Neve 33609)? Maybe at mild settings, but definitely not pushed. Software EQs have a much better chance of competing with hardware.

The software compressors at the top are the new DDMF MagicDeathEye Stereo and probably also the new UAD 175.

SV-315 was ahead of its time but the main problem with Sonalksis was overpricing.

Tone Project Unisum.
Lagerfeldt sold a hardware piece because of it.

Also I absolutely LOVE pushing Pulsar Mu, u-he presswerk, fuse audio vcl515, black rooster black ash and voxengo deft compressor.

These sound great pushed.
I also wouldn’t mind pushing softube FET and summit, and a few others.

It’s 2020 :)

Don't own a 33609, 2250 or Fairchild. Would love to A/B something like a good Fairchild clone to plugins. One of the online "analog" rental services has a remote Fairchild clone. Maybe one day I'll book some time.

I compared the DMG 2250 to the UAD version and thought they were incredibly close. The IK 33609 sounds to my ears like the UAD 33609. I suspect they're in the ballpark. But that's in software to software comparisons.

When it comes to the stuff I've got experience with the hardware on, I find the very best plugins about on par soundwise and kicking the shit out of hardware on convenience, cost, noise, etc. I personally feel people think hardware will improve their mixes and the tools are what's stopping them from getting too the next level and I don't think that's actually the case. When you A/B a hardware 1176 with software on a snare, or bass, or vocal and the differences are minute, the hardware ain't going to take your mix to the next level. I think that's why so many big names have gone ITB and still produce way better mixes than I ever could. It's about the experience and no how more than the gear.

This thread got me testing DMG TrackComp and wow, I'm impressed...

Thanks anyway! I use software only but Unisum is really amazing, wouldn't have wondered if anybody sold their hardware for Unisum.

Spot on, people often go backwards when they start seeking for culprit and where to improve.

Let's not misrepresent history here. Dave did NOT code the original SV-315 compressor.. that was all Sonalksis original team that created the back then revolutionary plugins SV-315 and the EQ (whatever SV that was called).

SV315 was coded by Gus Miller who had come from AMS Neve based on a hardware prototype design. They definitely worked together with Dave who had joined Sonalksis from Focusrite. Gus no longer makes plugins, he is doing the tech entrepreneur thing these days.

That's a great algorithm.
That was Gus@sonalksis- one of the founders, and the ex AMS-Neve DSP guy.

I remember him saying it was a model of some hardware prototype but no-one could remember exactly what.

Definitely not a circuit model in the sense you'd understand the term nowadays, but quite an interesting piece of code nonetheless.

Dave.
