I'll tell you the secret: there are no secrets.
I hear a piano layered with a pad. Oldest trick in the book. Attack from the piano, sustain from the pads.

Nope. To me it's just a piano. Nothing special. It won't be mentionned in that SOS article.

Ian broke that down on an Instagram Live once. He made a separate session, imported the MIDI for the piano, and then layered about 7 or 8 pianos and blended them to taste, then he bounced it all down to a single stem and put it back in the other session.
One was from NI, one was from Omnisphere, I don’t really remember the rest, he said it wasn’t too important which ones he used. How they layer together is more important.
Once it was a single track he just mixed it like normal. He may have even showed the track inserts and I remember it wasn’t anything insane, most of the interesting width and depth was obviously from layering so many different piano patches.
I’ve started doing this sometimes for heavy layering and it’s nice. I think some people stop layering too soon because they try to do it all in one session and the CPU tops out- you can really go nuts if you make a separate song for the layering. It also makes it easier to commit once it’s done because it’s just down to one stereo track in the main session. It’s kind of the equivalent of what Def Leppard would do on Hysteria. 24 tracks of one guitar part with different tones, mix it, bounce it down to one track on the other mixer.

Sorry for OT, but - despite loving this song - I can't listen to original anymore after having heard this 'cover'

Bloody hell. I'm yet to get into sampled instruments, but I shudder to think of the RAM and/or disk throughput you need once you start creating these composite instruments.oneway wrote: ↑Sun Jul 19, 2020 3:35 pm Ian broke that down on an Instagram Live once. Absolutely love the production in this track incidentally. The manipulation of space through the bridge and into the chorus is sublime - the abrupt shift from lush open space into hyperreal intimacy. It's all engineered to make the first line of the chorus ("don't show up") hit like a truck and it doesn't half.

You really don’t need much at all. A little RAM and a high-ish buffer. Key differences that made his way of doing it easier than the average person I see struggling with layering:
1. He wrote the notes and then chose a heavy instrument. He’s not trying to live monitor through 9 sampled pianos and “figure out” what he wants to play.
2. He’s not trying to do this in the same session as all his other instruments.
3. When it’s done, it’s done and he bounces it out. No more RAM or Disk Usage needed for the pianos.

Hi, I think I have what you are looking for, the presets are from Spectrasonics Keyscape. To be more precise it's one of these 3 presets: Duo- Hybrid Electric Grand, Duo - LA Piano + MKS Piano or Duo - Piano Space Wash.

That entire Dua Lipa record is funking brilliant !
Everything about it is top shelf...
The songs are right on target and all of the arranging, programming and playing is spot on,as well as the engineering and the production....
She's a great singer and she knows how to put it all together...
There's a lot of hits on that record and the people who were involved, deserve every bit of success that comes their way because of it ...
There's an awful lot you can learn from that disc...
It's a winner

I do remember that Keyscape was one of the many layers Ian showed in his session livestream.BassMake wrote: ↑Tue Aug 11, 2020 8:15 am Hi, I think I have what you are looking for, the presets are from Spectrasonics Keyscape.
