HY stuff is nice, but the Max stuff is often free (or very cheap)

There is enough stuff here https://maxforlive.com/ to keep any muso busy for many lifetimes, a lot of the stuff is better (IMHO) than the stock Live stuff and unlike Live it is updated almost daily ;-)
X32 Desk, i9 PC, S49MK2, Studio One, BWS, Live 12. PUSH 3 SA, Osmose, Summit, Pro 3, Prophet8, Syntakt, Digitone, Drumlogue, OP1-F, Eurorack, TD27 Drums, Nord Drum3P, Guitars, Basses, Amps and of course lots of pedals!

Somehow I think 10.5 will bring bounce in place, an overhaul of modulation effects, and a improved piano roll.
Not sure where you would have read that, that's some super top secret stuff, but it's that kind of hope that keeps me from selling Live, and older song compatibility of course. I've used it since 2005 v3 roughly, and it's ubiquitous, makes it easy to collaborate compared to Bitwig and DP.

I remember before Live 10 came out they where beta testing it and there where accidental little leaks from high profile users.

Considering there's not even a shred of Info yet, I doubt Ableton Live 11 or 10.5 is coming tomorrow.

It's just confusing to me: either they are reworking the Live engine from ground up, which was thought to have happened already between 9 and 10 or they just don't want to change a winning formular too much and play it save.

I'm just wondering what their programmers have been doing in the last 2 year, it's a bit of a headscratcher

As I mentioned earlier, I log into my Ableton account every month or two, and there's usually a new update for Live Lite. So, I assume that's what the devs have been doing the last 2 years: Further developing the software.

I have no idea about their release cycle though. Personally, I don't really approve a tight release cycle, when there's a new paid version released every year or two, but, that's just my personal view. I can see how it's successful for companies like Steinberg, and also Presonus now, so, I know where they're coming from. I rather skip one or two versions these days.

sure, great. But they're no small company and must have resources to work on new features and squash bugs.

I'm sure a all new great version will drop at some point and all will be forgiven :ud:

A lot is being expected from Ableton for the next update and all are big features like comping, ara2, mpe plus enhancements to general workflow, piano roll etc. If they are working on those that might explain the long silence and lack of feature updates.

I've used Live since version 3, bought the VST Pluggo from Cycling 74 when it came out. My honest take is that Cycling 74 have never been good at plug in hosting their amazing tech. Pluggo was abandoned when Ableton Live at v8 introduced Max 4 Live, and since then, I feel Ableton and Cycling have spent ten plus years attempting to squash bugs brought in trying to meld the two programs together. You just do not see sweeping changes to Live anymore, and this moment, when Ableton introduced M4L, is exactly when Bitwig's future developers split from Ableton to form their own company.

I haven't given up on them, but I remember reading an article with a main developer from cycling 74 saying he was glad to give up on VST, they had huge issues with it. Live 8 was the first version of Live I waited over a year to upgrade to, and my suspicions were right as people reported bug after bug.

I'm not trying to skewer Ableton here, but I truly think the reasons for the incremental changes compared to literally any other DAW in the last 10 years or so are due to them having to help Cycling rewrite huge portions of their code to be more efficient and stable in a host.

I wouldnt expect a whole lot from Ableton. Its going to be a couple more years before word of Live 11 comes out. If people want activity, move on to FL Studio, they are super active with free updates for life, and getting better every single day

No. FL workflow is horrible.
