I would like to ask you if the Fadd2 chord can be the tonic is the first scale degree (F major scale) or does the first scale degree have to be F major?

Post

Sure, you can do that.

It was popular in the 80s to have ALL the chords in the progression as a suspended 2 or 4, ie no 3rds at all.

Sounds really ambiguous and "light".

Add9 is barely different from the major triad, in just about all ways that matter . . . depending on the scale being used.

Then again, it might also depend on the style of music in question. But even then, it could come down to how classic or traditional you’re trying for, if at all.

For example, some types of classic jazz will generally feature a Maj7 as their “I”.

edit: “Add2” aka add9 isn’t quite the same as sus2, btw. ^^

For context, the OPs other topic refers to the Twin Peaks theme...

Thank you for your reply.
I'm curious what do you think about the chords played in this piece? Do I understand it correctly?

This is the topic:

Chord sequence found online:

F, Dm, F, Dm
Bb, C, Bb, C
F, Dm, F, Dm
Bb, C, Bb, C

Seems about right. Chord schemes do not have the precision & details you'd find in wtitten out staff. It's the rough gist you try to capture, leave out details such as inversions and ornaments.

As I see it, the extra G note in the F chord is kinda a piece of melody leaking into the chord. Capice?
