Hi there.

I want to make a mono synth sample to sound stereo so I duplicated the sound and slightly shifted few ms to the right one of them and I panned one to the right and one to the left. Now I have a stereo sound but the thing is when I check mono compatibility I hear the sound like I put it under a phaser effect.

Here you have the mono sound:

Here you have two of the same sound, one panned to the left and the other to the right and one of them is slightly shifted few ms so is not playing in the exact same time.

Here you have the mono compatibility checked with the master stereo separation knob from FL Studio.

I hope you guys can help me. Thanks!!!

try flipping the phase of one channel.
or maybe nudge it along a few ms.

a phaser is in essence, a very short delay. taking it closer to a delay sound should remove phase issues :)

Along with Vurt's good advice, you could try re-micing the synth in a real room, reverb, the ADT effect, slight old-style pitch shift, slight quantize, or even play it two times live-- creating very minor timing and velocity differences, all those panned hard right and left obviously. Good luck!

Here's an ADT-effect freebie which may come in handy:

And this plugin, while not free, handles a few of the things mentioned above automatically: https://www.stillwellaudio.com/plugins/cmx/

There are boatloads of spatializers and stereo widener plugins, probably your DAW has one or more already. Find out what you already own.

Lately someone posted a simple approach: 32-band stereo EQ, set bands alternating boost-cut-boost-cut on the left and on the right the opposite: cut-boost-cut-boost.
Leave lowest octaves and the highest dead centre. This should only affect midrange, say 160Hz-8kHz.

Good idea.
What amount of db gain / reduction are you thinking for each of those approriate bands?

"Apply to taste" ....

Maybe 6dB is enough already.

A good chorus is a classic stereoizer, can be a subtle one like a Dimension D emulation or something more obvious like the TAL-Chorus. Mix to taste.

I've always found this (used within reason, i.e. not over the top) to be the best I've heard at adding realistic stereo effect, rather than doubling;

For mono compatibility try things like MSpectralPan for free
https://www.meldaproduction.com/MSpectralPan
or not free Nugen Stereoizer which I like a lot. Their Stereoplacer is similar to MSpectralPan.

I'll make a free haas plug-in for windows to do what You need. Frankly, customer service for mac is a nightmare right now so I'm holding off on catering to it, apologies in advance. It should not use more than 1% CPU.

I was working on something that worked well the other day to do the same, and I can release it maybe by tonight. It has phase control also and is so light on the CPU that you'll find it a real pleasure to utilize.

Till then :)

Great advice here

try pitching one up a few cents and the other down a few cents...I learned this technique in recording magazine like around 2000, I have tried it on a few things, it's on the vox of one of my songs and I liked it, pitch up a few cents on one side, down a few on the other, one side slightly (by ms's) ahead of the beat and one after...I did this on an Akai dps12, not a computer thats why I havent done it since...recording magazine called it a spreader back then...it might be fun to try

I used that new plug-in I promised in a new video:

and will provide it today; I've been busy with responsibilities. You'll be really happy with it.
